    Minimum Qualifications
    Education and/or Equivalent Experience:
    • Associate Degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in Engineering, Electronics, or in a field related to the job, plus four (4) years experience related to installation and maintenance of electronic communications, computer and peripheral equipment or control and instrumentation equipment.
    • Experience may substitute for education up to two (2) years


    Licenses or Certifications:
    • If position resides in Electric Substation Maintenance, it may require a CDL .
    • Valid driver’s license.

    Under minimal supervision, will provide hands on coaching, training, and performing field audits to augment the Metering Operations team, as well as inspecting, installing, removing, testing, calibrating, repairing, and maintaining instrument rated electronic metering devices and instrument transformers. Together, these meter devices and instrument transformers, are a highly technical and specialized type of metering used for our large customers (commercial, industrial, and high voltage transmission). Focus will be on improving the employee, their productivity, and ensure we are achieving our safety, ISO , and GWP objectives.

    Additional Primary Duties Include:

    1. Communicates and coordinates with Governmental authorities, City departments, Austin Energy business sections and other utilities, vendors, distributors and manufacturers, architects, contractors, electricians, owners and consumers. Consults with outside customers on installation and requirements for new metering and service upgrades.
    2. Complies with and enforces Austin Energy’s Safety regulations.
    3. Supports internal customers with metering support for electrical contractor and customer related questions. Responsible for all metering projects including coordination with other departments, divisions and customers, verification of schematics and blueprints and acquisition of parts and materials.
    4. Inspects all commercial and residential services larger than 200 amps requiring Instrument Transformers, insuring compliance with AE Utility Criteria Manual. Coordinates and Installs new metering for large Primary/Industrial Service customers, Austin Energy Substations, Power Production and ERCOT Polled Settlement Metering.
    5. Provides job cost estimates for Austin Energy requests.
    6. Approves preliminary drawings, metering spots and provide metering specifications.

Schedules may be modified, and employees may be reassigned to another area during extraordinary situations or emergency conditions to provide essential services.

    Preferred Experience:

    • Knowledge of AE Distribution Interconnection Guide for Customer Owned Power Production Facilities less than 10MW.
    • Knowledge in procedures of inspection and approval processes of instrument rated services for Austin Energy.
    • Proficient in interpreting blueprints, schematics, cable schedules, wire diagrams, and one-lines.
    • Proficient in using AMANDA 7, Oracles Customer Care & Billing, Oracles Mobile Workforce Management & Dispatcher, ADMS Field Client, Electric Office or EOWEB , and PowerPoint.
    • Experience establishing and maintaining effective communication and professional working relationships with City employees, customers, and the public.
    • Experience providing leadership, work assignments, evaluation, training and provide constructive feedback to employees.
    • Has completed EPS Meter Inspector Training. (Certificate), or the ability to obtain within 6 months of employment.
    • Able to work overtime and be on call.
    • Able to lift 80 lbs.
    • Able to work in extreme weather conditions such as heat, rain, and cold.
    Duties, Functions and Responsibilities
    Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.


    Installs, enhances, troubleshoots, calibrates and repairs systems and/or equipment including: SCADA / AGC , Energy Management System, active map board, low power radio, multi-address radio, voice radio, digital and wireless telephone peripheral equipment. Installs and maintains substation electrical equipment i.e., circuit breakers, transformers, OCBs, switches, motors, meters, relays, remote terminal units, analog/digital telemetry, relay communications systems, fault recording systems, and fault locating systems, etc. Configures intelligent electronic devices (IED’s) for electric system automation i.e. protective relays, solid state meters, remote terminal units, voltage regulators using applicable manufacturer’s software. Proficient with ANSI Standards for electric systems. Proficient with ERCOT Protocols and Operating Guidelines. Proficient with communication network protocols; DNP 3.0, TCP /IP, IEEE 802b, Modbus. Proficient with schematics, blueprints, cable schedules, wire diagrams, one-lines. Proficient with various manufacturers’ software packages to operate electronic test equipment. Assists with engineering design, changes. Uses various electrician hand tools i.e., snips, screwdrivers, pliers, wire cutters, etc. Connects power cables to equipment e.g., generators, alarm systems, lighting systems, etc. Installs optical fiber, wire, conduit, coaxial cable, etc. Installs and maintains power transformers. Installs, configures and tests protective relays. Installs, configures and tests electronic measuring (metering) systems. Performs trip checks, point-to-point checks, circuit analysis, and in-service checks of substation equipment. Maintains stock and parts inventories. Maintains documentation for all systems. Responds to scheduled/unscheduled on call duties. Answers customer questions and provide assistance as needed.
