Description Salary Range: Start Rate: $39.81/hr - Top Rate: $49.73/hr Basic FunctionUnder close supervision, performs basic preventive and remedial diagnostics and troubleshooting, along with performing maintenance and repairs of transit and/or automotive vehicles, and assists other mechanics in more complex assignments; performs other related duties.

Examples of Duties- Moves parts and components with approved hoists, lifts and dollies to perform maintenance and repair
- Removes, repairs, replaces and adjusts components of major bus and/or automotive systems, including, but not limited to, engine, electrical, suspension, fueling, pneumatic, and hydraulic systems
- Performs remedial diagnostics and troubles-shooting on transit related bus and or automotive systems
- Performs regular preventive maintenance inspections of bus and/or automotive systems, repairs minor problems, and completes written form documentation of defects repaired and or needing repair
- Uses computerised management systems to report to and from work, logon to work order assignments, and create work orders for repairs needed
- Performs brake relines to include lubricating bearings, checking and replacing worn components, installation of brake shoes and final adjustments of all wheel end components
- Repairs minor damage to interior and/or exterior of buses and/or other equipment including, but not limited to, torn seats, broken windows, door panels, and windshields, minor dents, and cosmetic paint damage
- Operates tow truck, responds to in-sevice road failures, performs on-site remedial repairs to return buses and/or automobiles to the operating division
- Assists higher level mechanics with more complex repairs
- Contributes to ensuring that the EEO policies and programs of Metro are carried out
Minimum Qualifications- 2 years' experience as a heavy equipment or automotive mechanic; ORSuccessful completion of a 2-year, full-time training program in automotive technology or heavy duty truck maintenance and repair from an accredited trade or vocation school; OR1 year work full time vocational (30 semester units) and 1 year experience as a heavy equipment or automotive mechanic
- Must be able to obtain a Class A-P permit or AP drivers license
- Must have a valid California Class C driver's license or be able to obtain a California Class C driver's license prior to beginning employment with Metro
- Current and verifiable full ASE (H) Series Transit Certifications in H1-CNG, H3-Drive Train, H4-Brakes, H5-Suspension/Steering, H6-Electrical/Electronics is desirable
Essential KnowledgeKnowledge- Methods, materials, equipment and safety procedures utilized in the maintenance of either or diesel or gasoline engines, electrical systems, fueling systems and other systems found in heavy equipment and other vehicles
- Shop math, vehicle operations and safety
Abilites- Maintain and repair heavy mechanical and/or automotive equipment, safely operate a variety of hand tools and shop power equipment
- Learn other bus propulsion systems such as compressed natural gas engines (CNG) and Hybrid high voltage systems
- Safely operate buses, tow trucks, and other Metro vehicles
- Follow oral and written instructions
- Lift and move objects weighing up to 80 pounds
- Read, write, speak, and understand English
Special Conditions- Must provide tool storage unit and own tools of the trade as identied under Los Angeles Metro's Basic Tool List
- Must comply with all California Occupational Safety and Health Administration (Cal/OSHA) regulations and utilize approved safety equipment and personal protective gear including, but not limited to, respirators, eye and hearing protective devices (HPD), if and when required
- Positions in this classification are considered safety sensitive under Federal Transit Administration (FTA) drug and alcohol regulations
