    The Position

    Communications Systems Specialist's perform specialized electronic technician work involving the fabrication, installation, maintenance, repair and modification of 24-hour communication systems such as two-way radio and microwave equipment, mountaintop base stations, towers and antennas.

    Under direction, incumbents perform the full range of duties in the series concept and may act as a lead worker for lower-level Communications Systems Specialists and other technical staff. Incumbents assist in performing systems engineering and design, research, and development including frequency availability, path analysis, coverage area charts, site layout, installation methods, interconnection methods, site power sizing, and determination of power source types for each additional site or site to be modified as well as the repair and maintenance of a statewide communications system. This is the journey level in the series.

    This position provides critical support to the organization's mission by installing, testing, certifying, and maintaining Department and Agency equipment that enhances the operational abilities of the agency. The installation of safety equipment reduces the risk to Field Operations personnel while performing public safety services. This position provides a professional level of service in the maintenance and installation of all NHP regional radios, radars, video, and communications equipment as required by NHP and designated DPS agencies to perform the agency?s required functions. Key responsibilities include managing and maintaining DPS radio, radar, video, and emergency equipment. This involves performing annual testing, recertification, and updates per manufacturer requirements, accurately recording results, and ensuring correct equipment assignments in databases. The role also includes coordinating repairs, facilitating the proper assignment and configuration of equipment, managing inventory, and ensuring compliance with NHP build procedures. Additionally, the responsibilities extend to organizing and testing removed equipment for potential reuse and ensuring accurate asset and parts inventory management. ***THIS RECRUITMENT MAY CLOSE WITHOUT FURTHER NOTICE DEPENDING ON THE NUMBER OF APPLICATIONS RECEIVED.     To Qualify:

    In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
    Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications) Associate's degree from an accredited college or university in electronics technology or equivalent with course work in algebra, trigonometry, schematics, electronics laboratories, corrective maintenance procedures, and technical writing courses and three years of technical electronics experience, one year of which included installing, maintaining, and repairing communications and ancillary equipment; OR completion of trade school, military or college training to the certificate level in electronics technology which included the theory of communication technology and three years of technical electronics experience, one year of which included installing, maintaining, and repairing communications and ancillary equipment; OR one year of experience as a Communications Systems Specialist I in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above. Special Notes Some Communications Systems Specialist I applicants must submit proof of certification as specified above within six months of employment. Special Requirements A pre-employment criminal history check and fingerprinting are required. Persons offered employment in this position will be required to pay for these items. Some positions require extensive travel. Some positions require on-call availability and emergency response during non-working hours including holidays. Work is performed during inclement weather conditions and includes climbing towers and hiking into remote site areas as required. Applicants must submit proof of certification of competency issued by one of the following: National Association of Radio Telecommunication Engineers (NARTE), Association of Public Safety Communications Officers (APCO), or National Association of Business and Educational Radio (NABER); or possess a Federal Communication Commission (FCC) radio-telephone license. Some positions require verification of certification, designation, or licensure at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment and will be identified at the time of recruitment. A valid driver's license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment. The Examination Application Evaluation Exam The exam will consist of an application evaluation. It is essential that applications include detailed information with time frames regarding education and experience. The most qualified applicants will be contacted by the hiring agency for interview.
