    CLASSIFICATION TITLE: Custodian

    UNION CODE: R05

    TEMPORARY END DATE: This position is temporary and ends on or before December 31, 2025. Any continuation beyond December 31, 2025 is contingent upon satisfactory performance and available funding.

    FT/PT: Full-time

    PAY PLAN: 12-month

    WORKPLACE TYPE: On-site (work in-person at business location)

    WORK SCHEDULE: Monday-Friday, 5:30am to 2:30pm

    ANTICIPATED HIRING RANGE: $3,680 - $3,900
    • However, offer amount will be commensurate with candidate’s experience, education, skills, and training.

    CSU CLASSIFICATION SALARY RANGE: $3,680 - $4,951

    PAY BASIS: Monthly

    SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS TO APPLICANT: Incumbent must possess a valid CA driver’s license or ability to obtain by date of hire, successfully pass a pre-employment physical exam and background check.

    POSITION PURPOSE: The Student Union, an integral part of the Student Affairs Division, serves as the vibrant epicenter of campus life at CSUB. This facility encompasses offices, dining establishments, and conference spaces, all of which contribute to the university's educational mission and enhance the student co-curricular experience.

    Under the general supervision of the Director of Student Involvement, the Custodian is responsible for ensuring the cleanliness, sanitation, and maintenance of the building. Duties include a wide range of custodial tasks and maintenance duties that support the educational mission of the university and enhance the student co-curricular experience.

    DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Custodial Support and Maintenance
    Properly train and provide daily work direction to student facility assistants. Dust and clean all surfaces including desks, shelves, and other furniture using appropriate cleaning agents and tools. Remove trash and recyclables from designated areas ensuring proper disposal and recycling protocols are followed. Clean and disinfect restrooms thoroughly including toilets, urinals, sinks, floors, mirrors, walls, fixtures, etc. Replenish supplies such as paper towels, toilet paper, and soap as needed. Clean glass doors, windows, and blinds to maintain a clear and presentable environment. Remove graffiti promptly from surfaces using approved cleaning methods. Clean furniture and upholstery as scheduled, applying appropriate cleaning products to preserve materials. Polish woodwork and metal surfaces to maintain their appearance and prevent deterioration. Perform general housekeeping duties to uphold cleanliness standards across the building. Identify and organize necessary work materials and equipment, including loading and unloading cleaning supplies and materials. Order and inventory necessary cleaning supplies and materials. Operate and maintain appropriate hand and power equipment and tools, supplies, and materials to perform assigned duties. Make minor repairs and adjustments to equipment and furniture, ensuring functionality and safety. Report facility repair needs identified during custodial rounds for timely resolution. Respond promptly to custodial and cleaning emergencies, addressing issues efficiently. Replace lamps in light fixtures.
    Event Set-up and Take-down
    Regularly monitor 25Live for events in the building and set-up instructions to properly execute event needs. Set-up and take-down tables and chairs for events, including technical equipment to support audio and visual event needs.
    Clean & Maintain Floor
    Sweep, mop (dry and wet), and vacuum floors regularly to remove dirt, debris, and stains. Strip, seal, wax, and polish floors using appropriate equipment and techniques to maintain their integrity. Spot clean and perform full carpet cleaning as needed, utilizing carpet cleaning equipment effectively. Use and maintain powered floor cleaning equipment to ensure optimal performance and safety.
    REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

    EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE - One (1) year of recent experience (within 3 years) in industrial custodial maintenance work.

    LICENSES - Possession of a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain by date of hire.

    SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE & ABILITIES (SKA’s) -
    • Regular and reliable attendance is required.
    • Ability to read and write at a level appropriate to the duties of the position.
    • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions to ensure safety.
    • Ability to operate and care for custodial equipment and supplies applicable to the position.
    • Ability to use custodial systems such as those used to track work orders and two-way radios for communication.
    • Ability to observe safety requirements and safe work practices and methods as required.
    • Ability to perform work involving regular physical activity.
    • Demonstrated customer service abilities.
    • Ability to use tact and diplomacy to effectively handle a broad range of high level and sensitive interpersonal situations with diverse personalities, and to respond appropriately to conflicts and problems.
    • Ability to initiate, establish, and foster communication and teamwork by maintaining a positive, cooperative, productive work atmosphere in the University with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within a diverse population and with those from various cultural backgrounds.
    • Communication skills; ability to effectively communicate information in a clear and understandable manner.
    • Thorough knowledge of English grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
    • Ability to interpret, communicate and apply policies and procedures.
    • Ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality.
    • Solid organizational and time management skills with the ability to set own priorities to coordinate multiple assignments with fluctuating and time-sensitive deadlines.
    • Ability to use technology including email, internet, work order system documentation, etc.
    • Working knowledge of or ability to quickly learn University infrastructure.
    • Must be willing to travel and attend training programs off-site for occasional professional development.
    • Must be able to work overtime, occasional holidays, and adjust working hours to meet special jobs. May be called back periodically to perform work as needed on an emergency basis.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
    • Three (3) years of recent experience (within past 5 years) in industrial custodial maintenance work.
    • Experience working in a college or university custodial department.
    • Demonstrated skills in an institutional/educational environment possessing a customer-oriented and service-centered attitude.

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS: HEAVY WORK - 50% or more of the activities involve walking, standing, squatting, kneeling or climbing; lifting heavy weight objects which may exceed 50 pounds. Frequent and intermittent standing and walking up and down stairs on even and uneven ground. Continuous use of hands for grasping, fine manipulation, twisting and gross manipulation. Occasional to frequent reaching above, at and below shoulder level. Occasional to frequent pushing and pulling, bending, stooping and twisting.

    ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS:

    SPECIAL CONDITIONS:

    SCREENING: Only those applicants possessing experience most directly related to the immediate needs of the office will be invited to appear before a Qualifications Appraisal Board for the purpose of appraising training, experience, and interest in the position.
