    Position Scope

    The Police Rangemaster oversees the Police Department’s firing range; conducts training for officers, detention personnel, municipal security, and court security in the safe and accurate handling of firearms and other law enforcement equipment.

    Primary Duties and Responsibilities

    The following duties ARE NOT intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by all employees in this classification, only a representative summary of the primary duties and responsibilities. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties.
    • Organizes, coordinates and administers all the range operations in support of both the Firearms Program and the Firearms Program Manager. Schedules range time; demonstrate proper use of firearms; observes students for compliance with Police Department range safety procedures.
    • Performs storeroom duties; maintains range equipment and schedules range repairs.
    • Conducts and maintains firearms and ammunition inventories. Performs research for ammunition selection.
    • Issues firearms and related law enforcement equipment such as holsters, magazines, and ammunition; schedules weapon replacement.
    • Inspects Department and secondary firearms. Makes necessary repairs and adjustments to Department firearms. Provides assistance with malfunctioning weapons to officers in the field as needed.
    • Tracks ammunition used by department personnel; inspects and maintains quality control standards for ammunition used at the range.
    • Conducts firearms training and assists department personnel with evaluating and monitoring the progress of mandatory training courses. Develops lesson plans and provides classroom instruction. Designs target courses and constructs, maintains and repairs targets and props.
    • Provides budgetary input to the section Commander. Makes recommendations for purchase of ammunition, weapons replacement, and training and safety supplies. Assists with monitoring expenditures to ensure compliance with the approved budget.
    • Prepares or completes various forms, reports, correspondence, logs, or other documents. Receives and reviews various forms, reports, correspondence, manuals, reference materials, or other documentation as appropriate.
    • Communicate with police employees, other city departments, outside law enforcement agencies, and other individuals as needed to provide technical information or resolve problems.
    • Maintains an awareness of new procedures, trends, and advances in the profession. Reads professional firearms related literature. Maintains professional affiliations and attends meetings, workshops, and training sessions as appropriate.
    • Performs other duties as assigned.


    Minimum Qualifications & Position Requirements

    Education and Experience:

    High school diploma or GED equivalent. Minimum five years’ experience in providing basic and advanced firearms training of which three years must be in law enforcement; OR equivalent combination of education and experience.

    Experience in law enforcement firing range work which involves the use and mechanical operation of most types of firearms, record keeping, inventory control and the repair of firearms and related law enforcement equipment.

    Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

    Knowledge of:
    • City policies and procedures.
    • Modern police methods, practices and procedures involving firearms.
    • Reality based training

    Skill in:
    • Computer software programs including MS Word, Excel, Access, Powerpoint, Outlook.
    • Listening, communicating and working effectively with a diverse group of people.

    Ability to:
    • Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
    • Establish and maintain positive, effective working relationships with those contacted in the performance of work.
    • Exercise judgment and make decisions as to appropriate action under pressure in accordance with rules, regulations and policies.
    • Observe and monitor people's behavior or objects to determine compliance with laws, codes and regulations; recall details accurately.
    • Comprehend and make references from material written and learn job-related material through observation, structured lecture and oral instruction. This learning takes place in an on-the-job training or classroom setting.
    • Comprehend written comprehensive Local ordinances, State and Federal laws.
    • Make mathematical calculations and draw logical conclusions.
    • Proficiently perform computerized word processing, comprehension, summarizing and writing/editing.
    • Attend various meetings as needed.
    • Maintain proficiency with a handgun.
    • Operate and instruct using firearms training simulators.
    • Complete OSHA/Safety training as required.

    12-Month Goals:
    • Ensure adherence to all safety protocols, range rules, and regulations.
    • Develop range use protocols for both PD and the public. To include scheduling, operation rules, hours, and staffing.
    • Hold two NRA firearm safety courses for city employees and families.


    Additional Information

    Must possess and maintain a valid, unrestricted Arizona Driver's License with no major citations within the past 39 months prior to the start date. Must be able to obtain and maintain valid CPR/First Aid certification. Must possess or be able to obtain an Arizona POST Approved Firearms and General Instructor Certification. Must obtain factory Certified Glock and AR-15 Armorer training within first three months of hire. Other pertinent licenses and/or certifications may be required. Must be able to work a variety of scheduled shifts.

    Finalists will be required to participate in a firearms qualification evaluation.

    Hiring Range: $29.27 - $36.59

    Salary range is the entire compensation range for the position classification.

    Hiring range is an estimate of the compensation amount for the selected candidate. The actual salary offer will carefully consider a wide range of factors, including skills, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, training, and equity amongst other City employees in a similar position.
