Minimum Qualifications
This position will be filled at one of the following levels depending upon candidate qualifications:
Environmental Health Officer I: Graduation with a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with at least thirty (30) semester hours of natural or basic Science.
Licenses and Certifications Required: - Valid Texas Class C Driver’s License.
- State of Texas Professional Sanitarian-in-Training Registration
- Successful completion of the State of Texas Professional Sanitarian Registration exam within 6 months of employment. Credentialed as an Environmental Health Specialist/ Registered Sanitarian ( REHS /RS) by the National Environmental Health Association ( NEHA ) with the ability to obtain a Texas Registered Sanitarian license within (Six) 6 months of acceptance of position.
Environmental Health Officer II: - Graduation with a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with at least thirty (30) semester hours of natural or basic Science.
- Two (2) years’ experience in the field of Environmental Health
Licenses or Certifications: - Valid Texas Class C Driver’s License.
- State of Texas Professional Sanitarian Registration or
- Credentialed as an Environmental Health Specialist/ Registered Sanitarian ( REHS /RS) by the National Environmental Health Association ( NEHA ) with the ability to obtain a Texas Registered Sanitarian license within (Six) 6 months of acceptance of position.

Position Overview:The Austin Public Health Environmental Health Services Division provides critical public health regulatory operations, including food inspections, special permitting, plan review, environmental vector control, and community education efforts.
These positions will primarily provide inspection services in unincorporated Travis County districts, including food, pools, and environmental complaint investigations.
The ideal candidate for these positions will embody ethical values and demonstrate integrity in decision-making. They will be self-motivated, capable of working independently with minimal supervision, and detail-oriented. Additionally, they will possess strong customer service skills and the ability to effectively de-escalate conflicts or challenging situations. This position will require working some nights and weekends.
Salary Ranges:
EHO I - $24.08-$27.93
or
EHO II - $25.74 - $30.50
Sign-On Bonus (*For those meeting eligibility requirements):
This position is eligible for an APH Sign-On Bonus.
- Complete 30 days of service with APH - $500 (within 2 pay periods of 30-day completion)
- Complete 1 year of service with APH - $1000 (within 2 pay periods of 26 complete pay periods)
- Complete 2 years of service with APH - $1500 (within 2 pay periods of 52 complete pay periods)

Driving Requirement: - This position requires a valid Class “C” driver’s license or the ability to acquire one by your hire date.
- External New Hires must meet the City of Austin’s Driver Record Evaluation ( DRE ) requisite . To be considered for a driving position, applicants cannot have more than three moving violations or a total of six Driver Record Evaluation points within a period of thirty-six (36) months.
