    The Office of the Public Defender is looking for their next Chief Deputy Public Defender who directs, organizes and supervises multiple branch offices or a major functional unit which includes supervision over a large staff of attorneys and support staff.

    Under the direction of the Assistant Public Defender, the Chief Public Defender will oversee and evaluate the operations of a division or major functional unit within the Public Defender's Office. Responsibilities include managing staff through subordinate supervisors, establishing operational procedures and divisional policies related to administrative, personnel, and fiscal matters, and contributing to the development of departmental policies and procedures. The role also involves maintaining effective communication and collaboration with judges, law enforcement agencies, and other County offices to address and resolve procedural issues.

    CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

    Background: A background investigation will be conducted, including a DOJ/FBI fingerprint check and drug screening.

    Minimum Requirements

    License:

    Must be a member in good standing of the California State Bar; must indicate California Bar License number on the supplemental questionnaire.

    -AND-

    Experience:
    Five (5) years of criminal trial experience as a defense attorney, which includes at least two (2) years of experience leading and/or assigning cases as a felony, misdemeanor, or leading specialty teams.

    Desired Qualifications

    Experience equivalent to a Deputy Public Defender IV or higher with San Bernardino County Public Defender's Office is highly desirable.
