    Position Summary

    San Diego State University is seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Instructional Support Technician (IST) to join the School of Art and Design’s Applied Design program. Reporting to the School Director, the IST will play a crucial role in providing comprehensive instructional support for all shops and labs, including Ceramics, Furniture Design and Woodworking, and Jewelry and Metalwork.

    Key Responsibilities
    • Ensure each Applied Design shop/lab has the necessary materials and supplies for instruction. Maintain inventory by ordering, purchasing, receiving, and stocking materials, supplies, and equipment parts, including semester-by-semester consumables funded by course fees.
    • Serve as an expert on the proper functioning of all machinery, performing routine preventive maintenance and basic repairs as needed.
    • Be highly knowledgeable and skilled in the safety protocols of all machinery in the shops/labs. Train undergraduate and graduate students on the safe use of all equipment and supervise students during open shop/lab hours.
    • Train and supervise graduate assistants, undergraduate student assistants, and volunteer shop/lab monitors on all aspects of their work assignments.

    Position Information
    • This is a full-time (1.0 time-base), benefits eligible, permanent/probationary position.
    • This position is designated non-exempt under FLSA and is eligible for overtime compensation.
    • Standard SDSU work hours are Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.
    • The individual hired into this role will work on campus at SDSU in San Diego.

    Department Summary

    The School of Art and Design in the College of Professional Studies and Fine Arts is a creative learning community in which students develop their practice as artists, designers, and art historians who work in and across media while enhancing their visual, material, and conceptual thinking. Located on the Pacific Rim and at the border with Mexico, the School is dedicated to the integration of art, design, and community building in alignment with the School’s commitments to social / environmental justice and innovative entrepreneurship. Through both discipline-specific and multidisciplinary approaches to teaching and learning, we support students to innovate solutions, express ideas, imagine possibilities, and interpret the world through historical, cultural, and global contexts.

    In addition to sixteen tenured/tenure track faculty members, the school employs approximately 70 lecturers and graduate teaching associates to serve approximately 1,300 majors and 20 graduate students. The Director leads the School with the support of eight full-time staff positions, including one Instructional Support Technician, two Equipment Technicians, one Administrative Analyst/Specialist, three Administrative Support Coordinator II positions, and one Information Technology Consultant.     Education and Experience

    Equivalent to two years of experience providing instructional support services for a unit or discipline, acting as a student assistant, or in producing materials or supplies related to the discipline.

    or

    Equivalent to two years of college with 16 semester units in courses involving extensive use of materials, supplies, or equipment and in a discipline related to the area to which assigned may be substituted for one year of the required experience.

    or

    Equivalent to four years of college with 16 semester units in courses involving extensive use of materials, supplies, or equipment and in a related discipline may be substituted for the experience.

    Key Qualifications
    • Experience working with machinery and equipment in shops/labs for Ceramics, Furniture Design and Woodworking, and Jewelry and Metalwork.
    • Bachelor of Arts degree in Art, Design, or related field is preferred.

    Licenses/Certifications Required
    • Valid California Driver’s License or the ability to obtain one within 10 days of hire.

    Compensation and Benefits

    Starting salary upon appointment is not expected to exceed $4,206 per month.

    Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department’s fiscal resources.

    CSU Classification Salary Range: $4,206 - $7,299 per month.
