    DESCRIPTION

    The Department of Library, Arts and Culture has an immediate opening for two (2) unclassified, at-will, part-time, Library Assistant (Library Aide Non-Career). Under the direct supervision of a General Librarian or Senior Librarian, the Library Assistants will assist patrons of all ages with questions, computers, resources, and library services. The selected candidate will work out of Main Library.

    Non-Career employees are allowed a maximum of 1600 work hours over 12 months and are considered temporary, at-will employees who are not typically eligible for benefits. However, non-career employees may qualify for health coverage and sick leave accruals subject to applicable federal and state provisions. The incumbent in this position will typically work 18 to 24 hours per week.

    EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

    • Assists patrons with questions, computers, resources, and library services;
    • Arrange supplies and work areas each day and request additional supplies as necessary;
    • Attend scheduled training sessions;
    • Prepare periodic reports, including internship progress; and;
    • Help run Library Programs;
    • Performs other related duties as asigned.


    REQUIREMENTS TO FILE

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
    • Experience equivalent to six months of full-time clerical experience involving significant amounts of alphabetical and numerical filings;
    • Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing, follow both verbal and written directions, and to type 20 net words per minute;
    • Ability to lift up to 40 pounds and maneuver book trucks;
    • Willingness to work part-time and irregular schedules, including evenings and weekends;
    • A valid driver's license or the ability to arrange necessary and timely transportation for field travel, may be required for some assignments.
    DESIREABLE QUALIFICATIONS
    • A high school diploma;
    • One year of library experience;
    • Bilingual in English and Spanish.
    SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATES WILL DEMONSTRATE
    • Ability to assist with maintaining good patron behavior and discipline within the library
    • Ability to be flexible and easily handle varying work assignments and schedules
    • Ability to work with large groups of children, teens, and adults in an active atmosphere
    • Ability to maintain simple records, and work cooperatively with others, including the public
    • Ability to provide positive and consistent customer service to a diverse community
    • Ability to exercise professionalism and to combine tact, patience, and a personable demeanor
    • Strong computer skills (I.e., internet and Microsoft Office) and the ability to learn library related technology.
