    The Position

    Bargaining Unit: Local 21 - Supervisory Management

    The Contra Costa County Public Works Department - Transportation Engineering Division is offering an excellent employment opportunity to fill one (1) vacant Engineering Technician Supervisor - Traffic position, located in Martinez, CA. The Engineering Technician Supervisor - Traffic oversees the traffic operations program and supervises the personnel assigned to that function. The position is also responsible for coordinating with the Sign Shop in the Maintenance Division and the Signal Shop in the Facilities Division. This position will directly supervise other technicians and staff within the Traffic Section while providing extensive support to other Divisions within Public Works and outside the Department, including the general public and other agencies.

    The Contra County Public Works Department (CCCPWD) is responsible for the maintenance and operation of over 650 miles of roads, 79 miles of streams and channels, and over 150 County buildings. CCCPWD services include parks and recreation, sandbag distribution, flood control, road and facilities maintenance, and storm water management. CCCPWD operates two airports, Buchanan Field Airport in Concord, and Byron Airport in Byron. CCCPWD strives for continuous improvement to deliver cost effective, safe reliable and sustainable projects, programs, and quality services.

    What you will typically be responsible for:
    • Overseeing, coordinating, and evaluating the work of Engineering Technicians, Traffic Safety Investigators, and other assigned positions. Provides continuous training and coaching to subordinates to enhance work performance
    • Managing and coordinating traffic engineering studies, plan reviews, radar speed trailer deployments, traffic data collection, collision data, compliance with the California Manual on Traffic Control Devices, and on-site signing and striping projects
    • Coordinating and working closely with the County Sign Shop (Maintenance) and County Signal Shop (Facilities) to ensure traffic standards and practices are applied in the field
    • Overseeing volume and speed data collection efforts Countywide, and collection and analysis of collision data provided in the SWITRS database
    • Directing and managing the workload of staff to optimize their performance and reorganize their schedules based on priority and need
    • Independently representing the County and Department with members of the Public and Elected officials, as well as within the Department

    The eligible list established from this recruitment may remain in effect for six months.

    Minimum Qualifications

    License Required: Possession of a valid California Motor Vehicle Operator’s license.

    Education: Completion of 60 semester units from an accredited college or university with at least 15 units in engineering and/or advance mathematics courses, plus completion of courses in algebra, geometry and trigonometry.

    Experience: Five years of technical engineering experience at a level equivalent to Engineering Technician - Senior which includes at least two (2) years in a Transportation/Traffic Engineering Section and three (3) years in design involving the concepts and procedures of plans, utilities, drafting, and projects.

    Substitution: Additional work experience in transportation, drafting or other Engineering related technical areas may be substituted for the required college units on a year-for-year basis up to a maximum of two (2) years.

    Selection Process
