The PositionThe City of Riverside, Finance Department is accepting applications for the position of
Inventory Control Specialist I to fill one (1) vacancy in the
Purchasing Division. The eligibility list established may be used to fill the current and/or upcoming vacancies within this classification for up to six (6) months.
The Inventory Control Specialist I performs both manual and administrative support tasks in the receiving, storing, organizing, and issuing of a variety of materials and supplies.
Work PerformedTypical duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Receive, accept, and unpack incoming materials and supplies; move and organize current inventory to make room for new arrivals; monitor placement and organization to ensure all equipment is available and ready for issuance.
- Check delivery receipts with purchase order, review order details, and evaluate order with quote requests from vendors; perform basic mathematical calculations to ensure the correct items have been received.
- Check items for soundness and condition; note and report equipment, materials, or supplies that have arrived defective or not working.
- Assign stock numbers to incoming supplies and materials and place items in assigned location.
- Issue materials and supplies as requested and keep appropriate records; ensure the appropriate personnel are given equipment and materials in a timely manner.
- Receive returned items; document reason for return and make the appropriate decisions regarding handling of returned items.
- Count stock items in filling requests.
- Operate forklift, crane, and other stockroom equipment; adhere and comply with safety and general operational standards; order all of the fluids, oils, lubricating, Hydraulic, transmission, and antifreeze for heavy equipment used in the Department.
- Assist in maintaining stock records; perform routine clerical tasks and administrative support for the care and keeping of inventory; assist and support in periodic inventories and stockroom evaluations; ensure the effective and efficient storage and usage of inventory for the department.
- Operate a vehicle in the pick-up and delivery of supplies and materials.
- Perform general clean-up of storage facilities; monitor and maintain storeroom to ensure safety and cleanliness.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
QualificationsEducation: High School graduation or satisfactory equivalent (GED).
Experience: Six (6) months of experience in stores or warehouse work.
Highly Desired Qualifications: - Demonstrated experience working in a warehouse performing various functions
- Proficient experience in inventory control having demonstrated practices to ensure inventory integrity
- Extensive experience using Microsoft Outlook and Microsoft Excel for daily communications and creating detailed reports
- Experience operating forklifts such as stand up and sit down forklifts
Licenses and Certifications: Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid, appropriate California Class “C” Motor Vehicle Operator’s License.
When assigned to the Central Stores Department, be certified, or have the ability to obtain certification within 6 months from the date of hire, to dispense propane to refuel propane powered forklifts and be certified to operate all types of forklift equipment.

- Retirement for Classic Members -For employees hired after 1/1/2013 who are CLASSIC MEMBERS of California Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS) or a reciprocal agency as of 12/31/12 and have not been separated from service from such agency for six months or more, the retirement benefit shall be 2.7 % @ age 55; 3 year final compensation.The required employee contribution is 8%. The City does not participate in Social Security; thus, employees do not bear this additional 6.2% expense.
- Retirement for New Members - For employees hired 1/1/2013 or later and who ARE NOT a member of the California Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS) or a reciprocal agency as of 12/31/12, or those who have been separated from a public agency which contracts with CalPERS or a reciprocal agency for six months or more, the retirement benefit shall be 2% at age 62; 3 year final compensation.The required employee contribution is 50% of the normal cost and is subject to change per CalPERS every fiscal year. The City does not participate in Social Security; thus, employees do not bear this additional 6.2% expense.
- Health Insurance - The City offerssix health insurance plans and contributes up to $1,469 per month for employee and dependent coverage.
- Dental Insurance - The City provides three dental insurance plans and contributes up to $45 per month.
- Vision Insurance - The City provides vision coverage through Vision Service Plan (VSP) for employees and their dependents that are enrolled in medical coverage.
- Life Insurance - The City provides and pays for term life insuranceequal to $100,000. Additional Life Insurance is available and voluntary for employee and eligible dependents (up to $300k).
- Deferred Compensation - The City contributes $25 a month with a minimum employee contribution of $12.50 per check. Participation in the deferred compensation plan is optional.
- Leave Benefits - Includes vacation leave, sick leave, bereavement leave, and holiday benefits.
- Flexible Spending Account - The City offers a Health Care and Dependent Care Flexible Spending Plan for optional participation.
