    About the Medical Examiner:

    The Department of Medical Examiner investigates and determines the circumstances, manners and cause of all violent, sudden or unusual deaths occurring within the County. Each year approximately 18,000 cases are reported to the Department, of which about half fall within its jurisdiction. We conduct about 5,700 autopsies per year, making it one of the largest medical and most technologically sophisticated examiner’s offices in the world, due to the complexity of cases investigated, including numerous high-profile cases.

    Essential Job Functions

    • Receives and reconciles physical evidence (i.e. hair and nail kits, ligatures, projectiles, blood stain cards, Gun Shot Residue (GSR) kits, and medical evidence).
    • Collects background information (e.g. type of evidence, collector, investigating officer, handling agency, agency tracking #).
    • Verifies that all incoming evidence is packaged and sealed correctly.
    • Books case evidence.
    • Maintains and stores evidence.
    • Facilitates final disposition of evidence (i.e. disposal or release).
    • Interacts with internal and external stakeholders (e.g. law enforcement agencies, families, departmental staff, vendors, and courts).
    • Assembles customized evidence collection kits (e.g. hair kits, fingernail kits, and sexual assault, etc.).
    • Provides evidence collection supplies to department divisions (Operations, Medical and Forensic Lab) upon request.
    • Generates and submits monthly and periodic inventory reports.
    • Retrieves historical evidence logs and laboratory reports.
    • Disposes of medical evidence according to the departmental retention policy.
    • Drives a personal or County-issued motor vehicle to arrive at various sites.
    • Trains departmental staff (Forensic attendants, Forensic technicians, Investigators, Medical Examiner, volunteers, etc.) on proper evidence collection techniques (preservation, packaging, and submission).


    Requirements

    HOW DO YOU QUALIFY:

    Six months experience in stock, property or supply work.

    LICENSE:
    A valid California Class “C” Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.

    PHYSICAL EXPECTATIONS:

    Physical Class III - Moderate. This class requires that the incumbent stand or walk most of the time with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, reaching, working on irregular surfaces, occasional lifting of objects weighing over 25 pounds, and frequent lifting of 10-25 pounds.

    TRANSFER OF TEST RESPONSES:
    If you have taken identical components recently for other exams, your responses may be automatically transferred to this examination. This exam contains test components that might be used on future exams, and your responses could be transferred to that exam.

    ELIGIBILITY INFORMATION:

    The names of candidates receiving a passing grade in the examination will be placed on the eligible list in the order of their score group for a period of 12 months following the date of promulgation.

    The eligible list resulting from this examination will be used to fill vacancies at the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner.
