    DESCRIPTION

    The Department of Community Development has two (2) openings available.
    This is an unclassified, non-career position. Non-career employees are allowed a maximum of 1600 work hours available over a 12-month period. Non-career employees are not typically eligible for health/dental/vison benefits; however, may be eligible for sick leave benefits. This is an at-will temporary, part-time position.

    THE DEPARTMENT

    The Department of Community Development delivers a wide variety of programs and services to help create and maintain more safe, sustainable, and livable neighborhoods. T he department is comprised of five bureaus: Building and Safety, Code Enforcement, Housing and Neighborhood Services, and Administrative and Financial Services.

    Our staff of more than 200 works tirelessly to serve the community through an array of policies and programs, including land use and development, affordable housing, environment and historic preservation, neighborhood improvement, and construction standards and safety.     THE POSITION
    The Department of Community Development has an immediate opening for a Combination Building Inspector Aide II (Non-Career). This position will assist the Code Enforcement Bureau in inspecting existing buildings for compliance with the Long Beach Municipal Code and advise builders, property owners, and the public as to code requirements. We are looking for candidates who are committed to being customer focused, professional, team-oriented, innovative, and a community partner.

    EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

    • Prepares reports and maintains records in central files which may include typing related to permits and inspections.
    • Conducts routine field inspections and investigations to ensure compliance with various codes and regulations pertaining to property maintenance such as weeds, trash, paint, abandoned vehicles, signage and other nuisance issues.
    • Issues citations and notices of violation and works with residents, property and business owners to correct violations.
    • Takes photographs and prepares citations, reports, and information for City Attorney/City Prosecutor use at hearings and in court.
    • Explains, interprets, and makes presentations of ordinances, codes, laws, rules and regulations of elementary difficulty to residents, groups, agencies, businesses and other entities.
    • Makes referrals to appropriate City departments.
    • Performs other related duties as required.


    REQUIREMENTS TO FILE

    EXPERIENCE

    Option A: Completion of nine or more college semester units or their equivalent in Building Inspection Technology, Engineering or Architecture, Code Enforcement, Fire Science Technology, Biology, Environmental Health, or related field ( proof required at the time of submitting application *).

    OR

    Option B: One (1) year of paid, full-time equivalent experience making inspections to ensure compliance with and/or primary responsibility for issuing permits in compliance with various codes and regulations pertaining to building construction, zoning, business licenses, fire prevention, housing rehabilitation, property maintenance, and other nuisance issues.

    OR

    Option C: One year of experience in carpentry or plumbing or electrical work under the immediate supervision of a journeyman.

    AND
    A valid California Driver's License ( proof required at the time of submitting application *).

Proof of education for academic degrees should indicate the type of degree and date of degree conferral.     IDEAL CANDIDATE:

    • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing with employees, the public, and members of various organizations and outside agencies.
    • Ability to deal effectively with persons of diverse ethnic, social and economic backgrounds.
    • Ability to perform routine arithmetic calculations.
    • Ability to use computer and software’s.
    • Willing and able to work evenings, weekends and holidays.
