What will you earn?
Lifeguard - starting at $15.00 per hour*
Lifeguard/Aquatic Safety Instructor - starting at $16.25 per hour*
Senior Lifeguard - starting at $17.00 per hour*
* Positions which are eligible for PERS benefits may have a slightly reduced hourly rate.
(Note that this is a part-time hourly position and does not include health/medical benefits.)
What type of work will you be doing?
Lifeguards are responsible for observing swimmers and patrons who are using our aquatics facilities and outdoor/activity pools. You will be expected to perform water rescues, assist persons in distress, and administer first-aid when necessary. You will also perform routine safety checks and maintain the cleanliness of our facilities and pools.
In addition to Lifeguard duties,
Lifeguard/Aquatic Safety Instructors teach water safety, swimming, diving, and other aquatics classes to the public and perform all Lifeguard job functions.
Senior Lifeguard is a critical leadership role responsible for the supervision of part-time staff, monitoring pool conditions, and ensuring all safety protocols are being followed.
No lifeguard certification? We will give you FREE* training! *If you work a minimum of 200 total hours from the day you begin working for the Aquatics Division or from Memorial Day through Labor Day of the same calendar year that you are hired, lifeguard training and certification costs will be covered by the City! Please note, that the City may hold your certification document until you meet the 200 hour requirement which means you cannot transfer your certification to another employer. If you have Starfish Aquatics Institute or American Red Cross certifications, you will be required to attend a course provided by the City to transition your existing certifications to StarGuard and American Health & Safety Institute certifications prior to beginning work as a Lifeguard.
What kind of shifts/hours can you expect to work? We have a range of program hours and do our best to provide scheduling flexibility dependent on your availability and where we need you to work.
- Annual average of 19 hours per-week (maximum per year 988 hours)
- Potentially 40 hours per-week during the summer season (May-August)
- Work hours may vary and include early mornings, evenings, weekends and holidays, and/or split shifts (example: before and after school)
Where will you work? Work locations and assignments are subject to change and are based on department needs. You may be required to work at different aquatic facilities or pools within the same work day or work week. Although you don't need a driver's license to be a lifeguard, you must have regular and reliable transportation to get to your assigned work location.

Applicants invited to interview must successfully complete the following prerequisite swim test in order to move forward in the hiring process: - 50-yard continuous swim with head above water (unassisted)
- 50-yard continuous swim with head above water (assisted with rescue tube)
- 1-minute water tread (without use of hands or arms)
- Retrieval of 10-pound object from 7 - 13 feet of water depth
This is a safety-sensitive position, which means that you are subject to drug testing if we offer you a position, as detailed under NRS 613(1)(d). Minimum Qualifications Lifeguard: - Must be 16 years of age at the time of application.
- Must possess StarGuard Elite® or equivalent certifications in the following areas
within thirty (30) days of hire:- Lifeguard
- First Aid
- Bloodborne Pathogens
- CPR
- Emergency Oxygen
All required certifications as mandated by state and federal laws, or as required by the City, must be obtained and maintained as a condition of continued employment and may be at the incumbent's expense. Lifeguard/Aquatic Safety Instructor: - In addition to the Lifeguard minimum qualifications you will also need StarGuard Elite® or equivalent certification at time of application :
Senior Lifeguard: In addition to the Lifeguard & Lifeguard/Aquatic Safety Instructor minimum qualifications, you will also need:
- Must be at least 18 years of age at the time of hire
- High school diploma within three (3) months of hire
- One (1) year of experience as a lifeguard and/or swim instructor, preferably working in an aquatics recreation program
- Note: An equivalent combination of related training and experience may be considered.
- Possess and maintain a valid Nevada, or "border state" driver's license, as defined by NRS 483.
- Must possess StarGuard Elite® or equivalent certifications in the following areas at within three (3) months of hire:
