    The Position

    Biologists conduct fisheries, wildlife and/or habitat management projects and research studies including data collection, analysis and interpretation; develop and implement project proposals and work plans; prepare recommendations; and participate in public relations activities.

    Incumbents perform in a trainee capacity and acquire the knowledge, skills and abilities required in this occupation. OR Incumbents perform basic tasks or elements of the job not requiring the additional knowledge, skills and abilities to perform at the next level in the series.

    The position is the Water Development Biologist stationed in Winnemucca, NV. The position manages the water development program in Northern Nevada to expand usable habitats and improve populations of game and non-game wildlife by means of water development, maintenance, and improvement. Job duties include, but are not limited to: planning and coordination, gaining clearances from land managers/owners, managing budgets, purchasing equipment and materials, maintaining equipment, maintaining water developments, installation of new developments, supervising crew and participating on crew as a team member, managing water development database and maintenance log, as well as coordinating and facilitating volunteer projects with conservation organizations. Other duties as assigned may include participation in habitat restoration projects, fire rehabilitation, spring protection projects, and technical review of National Environmental Policy Act documents.     To Qualify:

    In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
    Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications) Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in biology, wildlife management or closely related field and one year of professional wildlife management experience such as conducting research studies including data collection, analysis and interpretation; development and implementation of project proposals for fisheries, wildlife and/or habitat management projects; OR one year of experience as a Biologist I in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above. Special Notes Work may be performed under adverse weather conditions and include extensive walking under difficult conditions in remote and/or primitive locations. Working on occasional nights and/or weekends may be required. Some positions require a valid State of Nevada Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six months of appointment. Special Requirements Statewide travel and outdoor work is required. A valid driver's license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment. Pursuant to NRS 284.4066, this position has been identified as affecting public safety. Persons offered employment in this position must submit to a pre-employment screening for controlled substances.     The presence of Nevada's earliest inhabitants, beginning about 12,400 years ago, is marked by many petroglyphs and archaeological sites. Baskets, decoys, and ingenious traps are evidence of the resourcefulness of these early people in a harsh and arid environment.

    Today, Nevada is the nation's seventh largest state in land area. Several hundred mountain ranges cross its landscape, many with elevations over 10,000 feet. In contrast, the State's lowest point (along the Colorado River) is only 470 feet above sea level. From majestic mountains to desert valleys, nature has endowed Nevada with diverse and unique ecosystems.
