    Job Summary

    The purpose of this position is to operate the library’s mobile library vehicles and provide customer service to citizens. This is accomplished by driving the mobile library to the planned daily stop, setting up the interior and exterior of the mobile library, and by staffing customer service desks; assisting customers on the public computers; providing ready reference and directional assistance in person, on the phone, or over the internet; planning and/or participating in the libraries' program curriculum; facilitating the circulation of library materials; handling and receiving money; providing shelf maintenance, including shelving and weeding. Other duties include ensuring daily preparation of holds; searching shelves for lost and missing items; stocking display areas with a new selection of books; and interacting with other City employees and citizens.

    Essential Job Functions

    • Operates the mobile libraries daily while adhering to all traffic laws; picks up the vehicle from the city’s Fleet Service Center; prepares the mobile library for daily use; drives to the scheduled stop and sets up the vehicle for customer use. Returns the mobile library to the service center at the end of the shift.
    • Maintain the cleanliness and readiness of the mobile libraries both inside and outside. Including organizing the onboard collection; ensuring supplies and equipment are stocked and ready to use before driving to the days stop; regularly taking the mobile libraries for a car wash. Reports any maintenance alerts to supervisors and Fleet Services. Reports any computer or technology issues to supervisors and Information Technology.
    • Facilitates the circulation of library materials by checking out library materials with the use of integrated automated system; issuing new cards; providing friendly customer service such as answering questions in person and by phone and solving problems; retrieving periodicals from the mailroom and making them available for customer use; processing inter-library loan requests; and renewing items in person and by phone.
    • Handles and receives money by taking fines; recording transactions in computer and in the cash register; making change; balancing cash register funds at the end of the day; and handling copier funds.
    • Provides shelf maintenance by shelving books in appropriate order; maintaining assigned shelving areas neat and in proper order; stocking book displays; performing periodic shelf reading to maintain order; and shelving books that have been used by customers.
    • Checks in library materials by retrieving returned materials from book drops; checking materials in using integrated automated system; sorting materials by format and call number; and recording appropriate information for holds and overdue materials.
    • Completes miscellaneous circulation tasks by ensuring daily preparation of holds; preparing daily cash report; searching shelves for lost and missing items; keeping various statistics and preparing monthly report; searching various bibliographies in library catalog; computer customers; typing memorial plates as necessary; cataloging adult and juvenile books; and answering phones. Opens and closes the building as necessary.
    • Receives and invoices library materials by receiving materials in various formats; confirming ordered items are received in good condition; entering invoices for items received and preparing payment vouchers for items received; returning damaged or incorrect items to vendors; and entering cataloging records received from vendors into the main frame.
    • Prepares library materials by applying plastic jackets or clear laminate, spine labels, barcodes, theft security strips, or any other necessary preparation to materials; sorting books by classification area; oversees repairs.
    • Coordinate with all other areas of the library system to maintain an efficient, effective and supportive team environment to implement division-wide and system-wide initiatives.

    Minimum Qualifications

    • High school diploma or GED required. Experience working in a library setting preferred.
    • Bilingual is highly preferred
    • No experience required. Bus and/or RV driving experience highly preferred.
    • Valid Texas Class C Driver's License
    • Ability to read papers, periodicals, journals, manuals, dictionaries, thesauruses, and encyclopedias.
    • Ability to deal with system of real numbers; practical application of fractions, percentages, ratios/proportions and measurement.
    • Ability to write reports, prepare business letters, expositions, and summaries with proper format, punctuation, spelling, and grammar, using all parts of speech.
    • The employee normally performs the duty assignment after receiving detailed instructions as to methods, procedures, and desired end results with initiative desired. Close and constant review is given.
    • No responsibility for the direction or supervision of others.
    • Normal tasks require use of definite procedures, with little deviation. Work requires some analysis or judgment.
