About the Office of Strategic Communications & Stakeholder EngagementThe Office of Strategic Communications & Stakeholder Engagement (SCSE) works to ensure that all of the agency's key audiences and stakeholders, including the public, attorney licensees, legal services partners, admission applicants-as well as its oversight bodies-know about the agency's public protection role and are aware of the State Bar's services and resources. The office supports the agency's key strategic objectives and initiatives, provides consumer legal information, and supports all key functions of the agency through online content, social media channels, publications, and media and public outreach. SCSE also manages the State Bar's main public website as a key resource for all stakeholders.
The Ideal CandidateThe ideal intern will have a strong interest in communications, marketing, or public relations development, with the goal of improving writing, messaging, and content creating skills in multiple platforms to multiple audiences and utilizing the latest software/technology to improve efficiency, outcomes, and reach. In addition, the ideal candidate will have the following characteristics:
- Currently enrolled in a 4-year college or university pursuing a bachelor's or graduate degree.
- Self-starter.
- Clear and concise oral and written communication skills and attention to detail.
- Knowledge of essential social media, graphics and video processing tools, Adobe Acrobat for PDF creating and editing, Canva, and generative AI.
- Excellent work ethic.
- Commitment to the State Bar's values of clarity, excellence, respect, and a growth mindset.
- Interested in public service, and in learning about and working in the public sector.
- Ability to work ten weeks full-time from mid-June through August 2025.
- Must reside in California and be able to go into the Los Angeles office at least once a week.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive matters.
DefinitionUnder the general supervision of SCSE management and the communications team, the intern will perform a variety of assignments based on the needs of the office. Assignment areas may include a wide range of writing and content creating, including webpages, email responses, social media content, media advisories, frequently asked questions, and chatbot responses, among other tasks as assigned.
Examples of Essential DutiesThe Summer 2025 Communications Writer Intern will work under the supervision of SCSE management and Communications staff on a wide scope of content that will include the following:
- Assist in writing and creating social media content and posts for the State Bar's LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, X, and YouTube platforms.
- Assist in monitoring social media; draft responses to comments and messages.
- Assist in creating communications plans/campaigns/updates for critical State Bar initiatives and actions.
- Assist in writing media advisories that go out to news outlets statewide.
- Assist in monitoring the Comms team's email and telephone line.
- After media monitoring training, draft responses to media questions for leadership's consideration.
- Review and test AI tools for the Comms team's consideration with a focus on refining key messages, producing summaries from large documents, and improving plain language readability, brevity, structure, style guide compliance, and tone in these types of content.
