    Job Summary

    The Mohave County Sheriff's Office is currently recruiting for a Animal Control Officer in the Kingman, AZ location.

    Performs journey level work in assuring and enforcing the city, county and state ordinances and procedures relating to animal control by patrolling assigned area, impounding animals, issuing citations and responding to calls and complains and participating in the care of animals.

    REPORTS TO

    Work is performed under general supervision of a higher level of authority and the incumbent has the responsibility for independently completing assigned tasks accurately and in a timely manner and in accordance with prescribed codes, ordinances, regulations and procedures. Work is reviewed through observation and evaluation of work performance, tasks completed and reports filed by the incumbent.

    SUPERVISION EXERCISED

    May exercise technical and/or functional supervision of new or less experienced Animal Control Officers or others as assigned.

    Essential Job Functions

    • Communicates and acts in a professional manner with the public, co-workers, and work contacts.
    • Operates a motor vehicle safely and in accordance with vehicle operation requirements to patrol an assigned area.
    • Operates a two-way radio effectively utilizing proper codes.
    • Patrols assigned area to collect stray dogs and other animals, and issues citations in accordance with violations of city, county and state ordinances, regulations and procedures.
    • Investigates calls and complaints regarding animals and takes appropriate action to abate the problem.
    • Conducts investigations into reports of animal cruelty.
    • Rescues and/or relocates animals in distress.
    • Locates, quarantines and observes animals for symptoms of rabies, impounds animals when necessary.
    • Collects, removes and disposes of deceased animals and carcasses.
    • Euthanizes animals in accordance with prescribed policies and procedures.
    • Responds to questions and advises the public regarding codes, ordinances, regulations and procedures regarding animals to include quarantines, licensing and sale and disposal of animals.
    • Provides court testimony and files complains for possible court action.
    • Maintains complete, accurate daily work records on appropriate forms and maintains prescribed records and reports.
    • Cleans, organizes and maintains vehicle, equipment and tools used during performance of work assignments. Reports any vehicle/equipment/tool malfunctions or unsafe problems and arranges for repairs or replacements.
    • Promotes humane awareness toward care and treatment of animals through education and by example.
    • As assigned, participates in training new employees or performing work for coworkers in their absence or as required to include providing customer service to the public, feeding and watering animals, and cleaning and sanitizing of animals quarters.
    • Prepares deceased animals that are suspected of being rabid and forwards specimens for state laboratory examination.
    • Performs related work or special assignments as required.


    Minimum Qualifications

    • High School diploma /GED.
    • One (1) year experience of handling animals
    • Any equivalent combination of education, experience, and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities may be considered in meeting the minimum qualifications.

    SPECIAL JOB REQUIREMENT
    • Must pass drug screen post offer.
    • Must possess a valid State of Arizona Driver's License at the start of employment and maintain said license while employed in this position.
    • Provide acceptable driving history at no cost to the County.
    • Must successfully complete a background investigation.
    • May also be required to successfully complete polygraph or other examinations or tests prior to appointment.
    • Exercise regular and predictable attendance and punctuality in accordance with Mohave County Personnel Policies and Procedures.


    Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

    Knowledge of:
    • Relevant local, state and federal ordinances, regulations and procedures pertaining to animals control and care.
    • Principles, practices, techniques and methods of animal control in performing education, compliance and enforcement activities and participating in the care of animals.
    • Physical and behavioral characteristics of common breeds of domestic animals.
    • Common disease symptoms and behaviors domestic and wild animals display.
    • The various types of wild animals common to the geographic area and their physical and behavioral characteristics.
    • The practices and techniques in the welfare and humane treatment of animals.
    • Mohave County Personnel Policies and Procedures, and Department Regulations..

    Skill in:
    • The safe operation of a motor vehicle.
    • Safe, efficient use of equipment, tools and aids utilized in performance of animal control and care activities.

    Ability to:
    • Work independently and efficiently organize workload and schedule.
    • Interpret technical information encountered in the performance of responsibilities.
    • Secure facts, document information, evaluate data and draw valid conclusions.
    • Diplomatically and tactfully resolve nonconforming conditions and issue citations for code and ordinance violations.
    • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with associate personnel, the general public and County departments and related local and state agencies and to deal tactfully and diplomatically in adverse situations.
    • Make accurate and detailed observations and comprehend, retain and recall factual information.
    • Maintain complete, accurate up-to-date records and prepare timely written reports.
    • Communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
    • Give and receive orders, to follow verbal and written instructions, and to work as a team member in a structured working environment.
    • Apply training and common sense to identify potentially precarious situations, to make effective logical decisions, and to exercise the appropriate measure of tact or force to resolve unruly, dangerous or emotionally charged situations with minimum injury to self, animals and other involved.
    • Comply with Mohave County Personnel Policies and Procedures, and Department Regulations.
    • Perform the essential functions of the job specifications with or without a reasonable accommodation.
