    DESCRIPTION

    THE DEPARTMENT

    The mission of the Department of Public Works is “to maintain and enhance the City’s infrastructure and environment for the benefit of the public.” The Department’s core services are focused on providing for and maintaining safe and efficient infrastructure for the community, providing for sustainable environmental protection including water quality and waste collection and diversion, and safely and efficiently designing, constructing, delivering, protecting and maintaining services for public facilities and public rights-of-way. The Department has six bureaus: Business Operations, Engineering, Environmental Services, Project Management, Public Service, and Transportation Project Management. The Department has over 580 budgeted positions with an annual operating budget of $250 million and an annual capital improvement program budget of $150 million.     THE POSITION
    The Department of Public Works is seeking part-time Administrative Interns to support the Engineering Bureau. The Engineering Bureau is responsible for the planning, design and construction of public infrastructure projects. This includes design and management of street improvement, bridge, sidewalk, stormwater system, flood control, and traffic-related projects and programs. The bureau ensures that projects meet safety, environmental and regulatory standards while addressing the community’s needs for safe, sustainable, and efficient infrastructure. The bureau works closely with engineers, consultants, contractors, and other City departments to complete projects on time and within budget, contributing to the city’s long-term development and growth.

    Non-Career employees are allowed a maximum of 1,600 work hours available over a 12-month period, and are considered temporary, at-will employees who are not typically eligible for benefits. However, non-career employees may qualify for health coverage and sick leave accruals subject to applicable federal and state provisions.

    EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

    This position will:
    • Review plans, permits, and technical memorandums.
    • Perform project research, including substructures, maps, and as-built plans.
    • Index, file, catalog, and maintain engineering maps, drawings, blue prints, plans, and reports.
    • Assist engineering technicians, engineers, and environmental specialist associates as required.
    • Take notes during meetings.
    • Maintain records and compiles data.
    • May assist the engineer in site visits and field surveys.
    • May assist the engineer in drafting project documents and correspondences.
    • May assist in project outreach events or public events.
    • Makes minor engineering calculations.
    • Performs other related duties as required.


    REQUIREMENTS TO FILE

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
    • Currently enrolled in a Bachelor’s Degree program with a focus/emphasis in civil engineering or computer science, in a junior, senior standing OR
    • Currently enrolled in a graduate level program or enrollment in an approved technology educational program.
    • A valid California Class C Driver License.
    DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Teams, Outlook, etc.) is preferred.
