    • Graduation with Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with coursework in Business Administration or Public Administration and experience at a leadership level in communications, policy development, or complex research and experience working in an elected official office setting.
    • Experience may substitute for education up to a maximum of four (4) years.

    The office of Council Member elect Mike Siegel is seeking a Chief of Staff to join the District 7 staff.


    Strong candidates will possess the following:
    • Outstanding communication, interpersonal and organizational skills
    • Ability to navigate complex organizational dynamics
    • Resourcefulness; with the ability to drive projects to completion
    • Strong political judgment and experience
    • Strong strategic planning skills and the ability to problem solve
    • Flexibility with regard to work schedule


    Job responsibilities will include:
    • Maintaining effective communication between the Mayor, City Council, staff, citizens and the media
    • Attending meetings/events on behalf of Council Member; meeting with stakeholders
    • Preparing/briefing the Council Member for Council meetings, work sessions, and events
    • Responding to elevated constituent issues
    • Leading staff, which includes prioritizing and assigning work; conducting performance evaluations; ensuring staff is trained
    • Writing resolutions, tracking legislation
    • Directing the preparation of letters, memoranda and other correspondence
    • Monitoring office budget/reviewing approving expenditures

    Travel:
    If you are selected for this position, and meet the Driver Safety Standards in the City of Austin Driver Safety Program, you may drive when necessary to multiple locations as part of your regular job duties. Otherwise, you are responsible for getting to and from these locations.
    Pay Range
    $41.50 - $54.00
    Hours
    Monday - Friday
    8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
    Hours may vary depending on work demands and business needs.
    Some evenings and weekends will be required.

    • Previous work in local government.
    • Demonstrated ability to maintain strong working relationships with internal team and relevant partners/stakeholders.
    • Demonstrated leadership, to include previous project or team management experience.
    • General knowledge of local, state and federal government.
    • Policy experience related to climate change.
    • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.


    Duties, Functions and Responsibilities
    Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.


    • Represents the Council Member at City Hall and the district.
    • Serves as liaison between Council Member’s office, departments, constituents, and constituent groups.
    • Represents Council Member at meetings and briefings and informs Council Member of significant issues.
    • Research Council agenda topics and evaluates impact of pending Council action. Manages office functions for Council Member.
    • Oversees strategy and implementation of office matters in terms of communications, community involvement, and policy initiatives.
    • Manages applicable communications and implementation of directives from Council Member to staff.

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
    Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.

    • Knowledge of Public Administration principles, fiscal planning, and budget preparation.
    • Knowledge of basic laws, ordinances, and regulations underlying a public sector organization.
    • Skill in effective oral and written communications.
    • Skill in planning, organizing, and evaluating the activities of a public sector organization.
    • Skill in using computers and related software applications.
    • Skill in data analysis and problem solving.
    • Ability to delegate authority and responsibility while maintaining appropriate levels of operational control.
    • Ability to work with frequent interruptions and changes in priorities.
    • Ability to direct and evaluate personnel in the accomplishment of goals and objectives.
    • Ability to quickly analyze information and make strategic decisions.
    • Ability to establish and maintain effective communication and working relationships with City employees and the public.

    City Government

    The City of Austin is a progressive, full-service municipal organization operating under the Council-Manager form of government. Austin has a 10-1 council system with an at-large Mayor and Council Members that represent ten districts. The Mayor and Council Members may serve in their respective seats for four years with a maximum of two consecutive terms.
