    Minimum Qualifications
    Education and/or Equivalent Experience:
    • Graduation with a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in Business or Public Administration, or in a field related to the job, plus one (1) year of related experience.
    • Experience can substitute for the education requirement up to the maximum of (4) years.

    The office of Council Member-elect Mike Siegel is seeking energetic applicants for the position of Council Policy Aide.


    Successful candidates will demonstrate:

    • Flexibility with regard to work schedule and ability to work odd hours including late night City Council meetings and community events on weekends

    Job responsibilities will include:
    • Researching & developing municipal policy strategies
    • Anticipating policy needs and overseeing the design & delivery of policy content for the office’s priorities.
    • Attending community and neighborhood meetings (including on evenings and weekends) as a representative of the District 7 office
    • Overseeing a process of internal communication, coordination, documentation, and evaluation for varied policy areas
    • Attending City Council meetings and other meetings as assigned
    • Assisting and responding to constituents

    Travel:
    If you are selected for this position, and meet the Driver Safety Standards in the City of Austin Driver Safety Program, you may drive when necessary to multiple locations as part of your regular job duties. Otherwise, you are responsible for getting to and from these locations.
    Pay Range
    $34.25 - $39.50
    Hours
    Monday - Friday; 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
    Work hours will vary depending on operational needs. Some evenings and weekends will be required.

    • Previous work in local government and/or community organizing.
    • Prior experience in policy making, to include policy experience related to climate change.
    • Demonstrated ability to maintain strong working relationships with internal team and relevant partners/stakeholders.
    • General knowledge of local, state and federal government.
    • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
    Duties, Functions and Responsibilities
    Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.


    • Advises Council Member on public policy issues.
    • Prepares, edits, and summarizes reports, memos and correspondence.
    • Monitors district and City issues and projects.
    • Researches and analyzes policy data and information to be used in policy creation.
    • Attends meetings and provides staff assistance during meetings and attends to needs and requests of Council.

    • Knowledge of public information, marketing, public relations, media relations programs.
    • Knowledge of the functions and organization of municipal government, to include the relationships between departments, divisions and agencies.
    • Knowledge of the principles associated with the role of meeting the necessary standards of customer service.
    • Knowledge Federal, State and Local laws.
    • Knowledge of city practice, policy and procedures.

    City Government

    The City of Austin is a progressive, full-service municipal organization operating under the Council-Manager form of government. Austin has a 10-1 council system with an at-large Mayor and Council Members that represent ten districts. The Mayor and Council Members may serve in their respective seats for four years with a maximum of two consecutive terms.
