    Minimum Qualifications

    • Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent.
    • Six (6) years of progressively responsible experience in construction or maintenance activities, including five (5) years of experience in water and wastewater underground utility construction maintenance, and one (1) year of which was in a lead or supervisory capacity.


    Licenses or Certifications:
    • Valid Texas Commercial Driver’s License ( CDL )
    • Required to stay current in the AW Respiratory Protection and Confined-Space Entry programs.
    • Positions in Water Distribution: Class C Water Distribution License or higher from TCEQ required at time of hire. A Surface Water License may substitute for the Class C Water Distribution License.
    • Positions in Wastewater Collection: Class II Wastewater Collection License or higher from TCEQ required at time of hire.

    Work Schedule:
    The supervisor position for Distribution System Services will be filled for the Monday - Friday, 7:30 am - 4:00 pm shift.

    The new supervisor for Distribution System Services will be responsible for emergency response within the water distribution system to include leak investigation. This position will also be responsible for line locates and inspections.

    Pre-Employment Requirements
    If you are identified as a top candidate, verification of your education (which may include high school graduation or GED , undergraduate and/or graduate degrees) will be required. You must provide proof of education from an accredited organization/institution.

    If you are identified as a top candidate and are in the military or a veteran, you will need to provide a copy of your DD-214 prior to confirming a start date.

    Job offers are contingent upon completing and passing a physical exam and a drug and alcohol screening test. Candidates must be able to qualify for Austin Water’s Respiratory Protection program. Job offers are also contingent on having a driving record that meets the City’s Driver Record Evaluation Standards.

    Candidates must also pass a Criminal Background Investigation.

    Driving Requirement:
    This position requires a Valid Texas Commercial Driver License ( CDL ).or the ability to acquire one by your hire date. External New Hires must meet the City of Austin’s Driver Record Evaluation ( DRE ) requisite . To be considered for a driving position, applicants cannot have more than three moving violations or a total of six Driver Record Evaluation points within a period of thirty-six (36) months.

    Commercial Driver’s License
    This position requires that applicants possess a Commercial Driver License to meet the minimum qualifications. Employees possessing a CDL must comply with the Alcohol and Controlled Substance Testing rules as outlined by the City of Austin Alcohol and Drug Policy for Drivers of Commercial Motor Vehicles.

    Work Environment
    This position is in a heavy industrial setting and requires performing all duties associated with responding to water emergencies, line locating, and leak detection in all weather conditions including extreme heat, cold and rain. Position will require adaptability and willingness to change or modify work load on demand and multitask. Position requires working in environments which may have hazardous situations.

    Confined Space Entry and Physical Requirements
    Candidates must be able to work in environments which may have hazardous atmospheres or in confined spaces where there is limited or restricted means for entry and exit, or where the activities of an employee are hindered.

    This position will require that you be able to perform duties with confidence climbing heights of up to 20 feet on ladders that support up to 300 lbs., descending into confined spaces up to 30 feet deep with the use of a SRL Body Harness that supports up to 283 lbs., and lifting and/or carrying equipment or supplies weighing up to 50 lbs., unassisted.

    All Austin Water worksite locations are tobacco-free. Use of tobacco products and/or e-cigarettes is not permitted on any AW worksite - including construction sites, parking lot, garage or in any personal vehicle located on the premises.

    $30.70 - $38.37

    Duties, Functions and Responsibilities
    Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.

    Provides technical expertise on a variety of distribution and collection activities. Reviews, evaluates, records data using PCs and video equipment in preparing and producing reports to ensure quality, productivity, and accuracy of work assignments. Interprets applicable Federal, State, and Local ordinances and regulations and ensures compliance. Coordinates activities with engineers, construction inspectors, and other city departments. Acts as liaison, as necessary, with other departments, divisions, and organizations. Investigates and responds to citizen complaints and concerns. Evaluates progress and results and recommends major changes in procedures, processes, and policies. Operates with substantial latitude for independent action or decision. Assists in budget preparation. Develops and implements procedures related to asset control. Develops specifications for purchases. Plans and schedules Safety and Tailgate meetings. Ensures proper training and guidance is provided for personnel.

    • Knowledge of City of Austin policies and procedures related to pipeline operations.

    • Knowledge of moderately complex utility mathematical formulas involving addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of standard and metric units of measure using whole numbers, fractions, decimals, computing rate, ratio, and percentages.
    • Ability to work in confined spaces.
    • Ability to understand, follow, and provide written and/or verbal instructions and training.
    • Ability to work various work shifts, on-call, and call back hours
    • Ability to work in environments with exposure to hazardous chemicals, solvents, hazardous environments, and adverse weather conditions.
