    Minimum Qualifications

    • Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent, plus (4) years experience in maintenance and/or construction, including (2) years experience in operation of heavy duty equipment.
    • One (1) year of additional related experience may substitute for (1) year of high school up to a maximum of four (4) years substitution.


    Licenses or Certifications:
    • Licensed for the operation of commercial vehicles in the state of Texas within 120 days of employment. Specific endorsements may be required to be obtained within 120 days of hire.
    • Must maintain a good driving record.
    • A Texas Certified Chemical Applicators license may be required in some City of Austin departments.
    • To be considered for employment in this position applicants must comply with Department of Transportation Federal Regulations and the City of Austin Drug Policy.


    Physical Requirements:
    • Continuous outdoor activity, frequent sitting, standing, walking, squatting, bending, twisting upper body, climbing, exposure to extreme heat, cold, noise, mechanical hazards, fume/odor hazards, toxic waste/material hazards, occasional kneeling, crawling, carrying up to ninety (90) pounds, lifting up to ninety (90) pounds. Indoor activity.

    POSITION OVERVIEW

    The position will consist of operating various types of equipment such as weed eaters, riding mowers, farm tractors, sweepers, dump trucks, paint striping equipment, saw cutters, and scarifiers on a regular basis. The duties also include bending squatting and lifting up to 90 Lbs independently, with the use of front loaders and backhoes on an intermittent basis.

    ASSESSMENT

    A skills assessment will be required for this position.

    DRIVER’S REQUIREMENT

    This position must travel between various locations as part of the regular job duties and the individual will be required to drive a City vehicle. Position will also be required to drive on the AOA .

    This position requires a Valid Texas Class C Driver License or the ability to acquire one by your hire date. External New Hires must meet the City of Austin’s Driver Record Evaluation ( DRE ) requisite . To be considered for a driving position, applicants cannot have more than three moving violations or a total of six Driver Record Evaluation points within a period of thirty-six (36) months. Job Offer is contingent on having a driving record that meets the City’s Driver Record Evaluation Standards.

    ESSENTIAL PERSONNEL

    This position is categorized as essential personnel. Essential personnel are required to come to work during emergencies or bad weather at the airport if they are scheduled to work and in some cases when they are not scheduled.

    The top candidate will be subject to a minimum 10 year criminal background check and security threat assessment.

    Reoccurring sweeper duty:

    Friday & Saturday: 12:00 AM - 4:00 AM

    Hours may change depending on departmental needs.

    Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.

    Operates various types of equipment including a track loader, rubber tire loader, backhoe, bobcat, front-end rubber tire loader and skid loader. Drives 12-yard dump truck to haul equipment and hook-up and drive tractor/trailer and truck/trailer rigs to haul equipment and materials. Provides assistance during emergency situations involving flooding and severe weather. Clears channels, creeks bridges/culverts and borrow ditches to minimize flooding. Collects trash in channels and creeks to improve water quality. Cleans storm drain inlets and pipelines. Provides assistance to lead operator in locating utility lines. Provides assistance in radio communication. Installs erosion control devices as instructed by crew leader. Performs preventive vehicle and equipment maintenance to ensure proper operating conditions prior to leaving for the job site (checks oil, water, fuel, tires, hydraulic system, etc., and makes appropriate adjustments) reporting any malfunctions and repair requirements to the supervisor. Performs traffic control set up at the job site to ensure a safe working environment, places and gathers cones, flags, set out traffic signs, etc. Skillfully operates and performs maintenance on variety of equipment and power tools (i.e., pneumatic roller, paint push carts, thermal push cart, paint stripers, blowers, propane torches, grinders, paint rollers).

    Train others on the jobsite.

    Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.

    • Knowledge of the provisions in the Texas Motor Vehicle Code relating to the operation of motorized equipment on public streets and highways.
    • Knowledge of the Texas Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices ( TMUTCD ) provisions.
    • Knowledge of safety practices and procedures.
    • Knowledge of city practice, policy and procedures.
    • Skill in oral and written communication.
    • Skill in handling multiple tasks and prioritizing.

    • Ability to use a surveyor’s level to maintain elevation grades on project sites..
