DESCRIPTIONThe Office of City of Long Beach District 9 Councilmember, Dr. Joni Ricks-Oddie, is seeking a results-driven, creative, and detail-oriented Community Affairs Communications Aide (Legislative Aide Non-Career) to join her dynamic team. This role is ideal for someone with a talent for execution, storytelling, and community engagement. As a key player in our office, you will use your creativity and organizational skills to support vital communication efforts and community events that make a lasting impact.
Hours: Minimum of 15 hours of availability per week, maximum of 20 hours per week.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIESAdministrative Support:
- Constituent Services: Respond promptly and professionally to constituent inquiries via phone, email, and social media, providing accurate and helpful information.
- Event and Project Support: Collaborate on the planning and execution of community events, ensuring seamless logistics, vendor coordination, and effective promotion.
- Community Engagement: Represent the Council District 9 office at events, building connections with residents, local businesses, government officials, and nonprofit organizations.
- Office Management: Assist with general office duties, including data entry, managing constituent calls, and resolving concerns.
- Documentation and Reporting: Organize and maintain records of communications, event plans, and constituent interactions. Prepare clear and concise reports as needed.
- Team Collaboration: Partner with team members to support community engagement initiatives and projects.
Communications Management:
- Craft engaging and professional content for social media platforms, ensuring regular updates that connect with the community.
- Draft, edit, and distribute newsletters, press releases, and other communications materials.
- Update and maintain the District 9 website with relevant news and resources.
- Develop speaking points and briefing materials to support the Councilmember at community engagements.
Community Event Planning:
- Support the planning, coordination, and execution of impactful community events.
- Collaborate with community members, vendors, and partners to ensure successful event delivery.
- Handle event logistics, including setup, registration, and follow-up activities.
REQUIREMENTS TO FILE- High School Diploma or equivalency is required
- Flexibility to work weekends and evenings is required.
- A valid California Driver License is required and reliable transportation to successfully fulfill the duties of the position.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with a keen eye for detail and tone.
- Strong organizational and multitasking abilities.
- Proficiency in social media platforms and content management systems.
- Creativity and familiarity with graphic design tools (e.g., Canva, Adobe Creative Suite) are a plus.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and the ability to quickly learn new platforms.
- Demonstrates initiative and ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
- Professionalism, discretion, and a proactive, positive attitude.
EXPERIENCE:
- Previous experience in community engagement, communications, or event planning is highly desirable.
- Hands-on experience with social media management and content creation.
- Familiarity with administrative tasks in an office setting.

Employee BenefitsThe City of Long Beach offers its employees opportunities to grow personally and professionally.As a permanent employee, you are eligible to receive fringe benefits that include:
- Retirement: California Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS) defined benefit retirement plan, which is coordinated with Social Security. The benefit is 2.5% @55 for "Classic" members and 2%@62 for new members as defined by PEPRA. Subject to employee contribution. Both the City and the employee contributes toward CalPERS retirement contributions. The city also participates in Social Security.
- Health and Dental Insurance: The City offers the choice of HMO and PPO plans. The city pays major portion of the premium for employee and dependents depending on the health/ dental plan selected.
- Life Insurance: City-paid term life insurance policy equal to three (3) times annual salary to a maximum of $500,000.
- Disability Insurance: City-paid short-term and long-term disability insurance.
- Management Physical: Annual City-paid physical examination.
- Vacation: Twelve (12) vacation days after the first year of service; 15 days after four years, six months of service; 20 days after 19 years, six months of service.
- Executive Leave: Forty (40) hours Executive Leave per year. The City Manager has discretion to grant an additional 40 hours each year.
- Sick Leave: One day earned per month; unlimited accumulation; conversion upon retirement to cash credit toward health and/or dental insurance premiums, or to pension credits.
- Holidays: Eleven (11) designated holidays per year, plus four personal holidays to be used at the employee's discretion.
- Transportation Allowance: $450 per month.
- Deferred Compensation Plan: Optional for employee contribution to a supplementary retirement savings program available through Mission Square Retirement formerly ICMA-RC Retirement Corporation). City contributes 1% of employee's base pay to the employee's 401(a) plan; effective September 30, 2022, the City will contribute 2% of employee's base pay to the employee's 401(a) account. Employees may opt to contribute up to the IRS annual limits as well.
- Flexible Spending Account (FSA): Optional election for employees to reduce taxable income for payment of allowable childcare or medical expenses.
- Flexible/Hybrid Work Schedule: Available (subject to City Manager approval).
- Paid Parental Leave: After six (6) months of City employment; up to 30 calendar days (160 hours) of PPL, taken in full-day increments, in connection with the birth, adoption, or foster placement of a child, up to the age of seventeen (17).
