DEFINITION: Performs radiographic procedures employing the use of X-rays to produce images of various parts of the body for the diagnosis of pathological and traumatic disorders.
CLASSIFICATION STANDARDS: Positions allocable to this class are assigned to a diagnostic radiographic unit and use a variety of diagnostic X-ray machines and related equipment. Positions in this class produce images of all anatomical structures of the body involving a variety of orthopedic, gastrointestinal, genitourinary, obstetrics, head and neck procedures, and/or mammography or body section radiography. They follow basic guidelines for positioning the patient and setting machine controls at operating modes and/or technical factors such as kilovoltage, milliamperage and distance. Radiologic Technologists operate mobile and stationary equipment within safe parameters specified by State law. They produce quality images of delicate anatomical structures in performing body section radiography, work under sterile conditions in surgery, communicate with the patient to obtain his cooperation and relieve his anxiety, and position the ill and the injured to avoid further injury, pain and discomfort.
Essential Job Functions- Receives and reviews physician's request for radiographic procedure and identifies the patient.
- Checks the operation of equipment daily by performing tube warm up and fluoroscopic tests, comparing a blank image with a standard image, observing a fluoroscopic image for definition, and checking switches and conduits for function.
- Sets up examination room, materials and equipment including selection of appropriate film, grids, collimators, camera, cassettes, syringes, opaque media, and catheters specified in equipment and procedure manuals.
- Operates mammographic, tomographic or conventional and mobile radiographic units; pushes or operates mechanically driven mobile units and performs radiographic procedures in medical and obstetrics wards and in surgery under sterile conditions.
- Performs a variety of orthopedic, gastrointestinal, genitourinary, obstetric, head and neck radiographic procedures, or mammography or body section radiography including delicate structures as in the inner ear.
- Selects and computes machine settings to compensate for such variances as patient size, age, sex and tissue density.
- Selects proper film size, positions equipment at proper distance and angle, and adjusts cones or collimators to image a specified area.
- Accurately positions the patient when the patient cannot be moved, deviates from basic positioning guidelines by angulating the X-ray tube and the film to avoid re-injury, discomfort and pain, or intruding the sterile field.
- Mixes and administers barium by standard dilution for upper and lower gastrointestinal and colon exams.
- Produces radiographs during other contrast media studies such as gallbladder series, cholangiograms, cystograms and pyelograms.
- Recognizes symptoms of reaction to contrast media and reports such reaction to a physician.
- Elicits the cooperation of patients by explaining procedure, attempts to comfort those who fear radiographic examination by providing assurance.
- Evaluates the patient's condition and applies immobilizing devices when the patient cannot cooperate.
- Uses supportive devices such as sandbags, angle boards and binders to obtain precise position.
- Uses equipment and lead shields, such as gloves and aprons, in accordance with State requirements for safety.
- Assists in the clinical training of radiologic technology students, and in familiarizing newly employed technologists with examination procedures by demonstrating selection of machine control settings, positioning the patient and checking for and identifying acceptable image quality.
- Processes exposed film to produce quality radiographs, as needed.
- Conducts classroom instruction of radiologic technology students and other personnel in basic radiologic technology, as needed.
Requirements MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS : Certification as a radiologic technologist issued by the State of California, Department of Public Health
-OR- A temporary permit to practice radiologic technology by the State of California, Department of Public Health.
-AND- A radiologic technologist fluoroscopy permit issued by the State of California, Department of Public Health.
SPECIAL REQUIRMEMENT INFORMATION: CERTIFICATES AND PERMITS REQUIRED: A current certification to practice as a radiologic technologist issued by the State of California, Department of Public Health OR a temporary permit to practice radiologic technology by the State of California, Department of Public Health AND A radiologic technologist fluoroscopy permit issued by the State of California, Department of Public Health. - Applicants must ensure the License and Certification Section of the application is completed. Provide the title(s) of your required certificate or permit(s), the number(s), date(s) of issue, date(s) of expiration and the name(s) of the issuing agency for the required certificate or permit as specified in the Requirements.
- Applicants MUST attach a legible photocopy of the required radiologic technologist certification or temporary permit and a copy of the required radiologic technologist fluoroscopy permit to their application at the time of filing or email document to HRExams@ph.lacounty.gov within 15 calendar days of filing your application online. Applications submitted without the required evidence of radiologic technologist certification or a temporary permit to practice radiologic technology and a radiologic technologist fluoroscopy permit will be rejected. PHYSICAL CLASS: Physical Class III - Moderate: This class requires that the incumbent stand or walk most of the time with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, reaching, working on irregular surfaces, occasional lifting of objects weighing over 25 pounds, and frequent lifting of 10-25 pounds.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS: Credit will be given to applicants who possess the following desirable qualifications: - Work experience as a Radiology Technician performing radiographic procedures in a hospital or healthcare setting as a certified* radiologic technologist.

Additional Information EXAMINATION CONTENT: Once we have determined that you meet the certificate and permit requirements listed above, this examination will consist of an evaluation of experience based on the application information, desirable qualifications and supplemental questionnaire at the time of filing,
weighted 100%.
Applicants must meet the requirements described above at the time of filing and achieve a passing score of 70% or higher on the examination in order to be added to the Eligible Register.
Passing this examination and being added to the Eligible Register does not guarantee an offer of employment. ELIGIBILITY INFORMATION: The names of candidates receiving a passing score in the examination will be added to the Eligible Register in the order of their score group for a period of twelve (12) months following the date of eligibility.
NO PERSON MAY COMPETE IN THIS EXAMINATION MORE THAN ONCE EVERY TWELVE (12) MONTHS .
