    Austin Energy is seeking an IT Infrastructure Engineer Senior to join the IT Network LAN and Telecom team and support all aspects of the network services the team supports. The position’s responsibilities include operational, hands-on support of all aspects of the network infrastructure the team manages, including the configuration, installation, maintenance, patching, troubleshooting, and decommissioning of network infrastructure.

    The duties include contributing to designing, implementing, managing, and maintaining a highly complex, secure, and reliable network infrastructure, documenting and troubleshooting network components, and using experience to recommend new technologies and solutions. This position requires on-call rotation to support 24-hour utility operations and travel between local sites to survey in support of the integrated network solutions.

    The primary duties of the position:

    • Maintains, monitors, and supports the infrastructure environment and/or facilities.
    • Diagnoses and resolves complex hardware, software, and connectivity problems.
    • Supports multiple systems or applications of medium to high complexity with multiple concurrent users, ensuring control, integrity, and accessibility.
    • Provides feedback and recommendations on requirements based on health check results.
    • Ensures processes and requirements such as backup and maintenance availability and security requirements are met.
    • Develops new alerts and monitoring techniques based on engineering requirements.
    • Develop scripted solutions and automation.
    • Performs routine maintenance tasks and planning for infrastructure systems such as backups, patch management, and hotfixes.
    • Monitors system-operating capacity in terms of (e.g., disk space, storage, and CPU utilization) and recommends settings changes to the operating system to improve performance and reliability.
    • Develops, maintains, recommends, documents, and supports tools and back-end utilities to provide capacity planning management as well as the resolution of systemic issues.
    • Participates in, conducts testing, and coordinates feedback of test results.
    • Provides Tier III support and is part of the on-call rotation. Occasional travel required.
    • Monitors ticketing queue and responds to service requests or incidents.
    • Monitors production, outputs, and services to ensure that SLAs and other quality metrics are being met.

    • Currently supporting and experience implementing, operating, managing, monitoring, documenting, and troubleshooting complex networks:
      • Switches (preferably Cisco)
      • Routers (routing protocols: BGP , OSPF , EIGRP , and VXLAN )
      • NGFW (preferably Palo Alto)
      • Wireless networks: Cisco (controlled by DNA and ISE ) and Aruba ClearPass
      • Network access controls: Radius/ TACACS and MFA administration.
      • Software-defined networks: Cisco DNA and ACI .
      • Load balancers (preferably A10)
      • DNS (preferably Infoblox or BIND )


    • Current intermediate experience with automation of work processes and procedures using scripting languages.
    • Knowledge of procedures related to regulatory controls, such as North American Electric Reliability ( NERC ) regulations, Critical Infrastructure Protection ( CIP ), Occupational Safety and Health Administration ( OSHA ), Federal Information Security Management Act ( FISMA ), Sarbanes-Oxley Act ( SOX ), National Institute of Standards and Technology ( NIST ), or others.
    • Experience creating and maintaining network documentation.
    • Experience communicating network infrastructure content to various stakeholders.

    Systems Discipline Additional Duties and Responsibilities
    Installs, configures, and maintains virtual and physical server and software components. Collects and maintains tracking and configuration documentation and plans. Administers, creates and updates access permissions for system accounts for enterprise systems. Administers Azure, Active Directory, Microsoft 365 at the enterprise level. Administers SANs. Executes capacity management for systems. Installs and configures new storage systems. Defines process for disk space provisioning. Executes disk space provisioning. Monitors and reports on disk performance and utilization.
    Network Discipline Additional Duties and Responsibilities
    Installs, configures, and maintains approved telecom/network hardware and software components. Maintains structured cabling systems, telecom systems, WAN , LAN , Cellular/ DAS , Wireless Networks and local Internet, remote access, VPNs, and connectivity protocols. Analyzes and implements network software or hardware changes. Establishes WAN , LAN , Wireless device profiles, device environments, directories, and security for networks being installed. May validate voice network configurations. Analyzes and resolves issues related to facilities bandwidth requirements and capacity planning. Monitors facilities’ bandwidth requirements and schedules requests for additional bandwidth. Provides support for connectivity or related network/communication issues for the user community. Monitors installed network and telecom equipment. Installation needs assessment for small to mid-size network/telecom projects, coordination and oversight of contractors and vendors for structured cabling systems, wired and wireless networks.
