    Who We Are:
    The Internal Services Department (ISD) plays a major role in supporting all County of Los Angeles departments and commissions. With an annual budget of over $885 million and 2,162 budgeted positions along with over 5,120 contracted workers of varying professions in facilities management, information technology, environmental, administrative, purchasing and contracting, ISD is the County's trusted partner and provider of choice.

    The Opportunity:
    We are pursuing an experienced and qualified candidate to fill a Sign Painter position in the Facilities Management Division. The candidate must possess strong working knowledge of graphic design software and applications, plotters, and other computerized graphic design equipment to produce signs, banners, stencils, patterns, decals, acrylic cut-outs, and other customized signage.

    Essential Job Functions

    Designs, paints, and lays signs and posters using graphic design software and plotters.

    Does all types and styles of lettering by hand including shaded lettering and the use of gold, silver and aluminum leaf.

    Prepares all types of surfaces for sign painting including wood, metal, glass, concrete and stucco.

    Matches colors and mixes paints and other materials used.

    Cuts stencils and uses them in the reproduction of signs.

    Fabricates signs by cutting letters and symbols out of reflective material or precut letters and placing self-adhesive sheeting onto aluminum blanks and laminating the completed signs.

    Estimates the amount of materials required, and maintains work records including computerized work measurement and accounting systems.

    Performs work in a shop or in the field.

    Drives automotive equipment to and from work sites.

    Makes signs and posters by the silk screen process as needed.

    Removes/abates lead paint as needed.

    Works from swinging stage to paint signs on sides of buildings as needed.

    Supervises subordinate workers involved in sign-making and other painting duties as needed.

    Requirements

    Requirements to Qualify:
    Completion of a recognized sign painting apprentice training program* of at least five years duration -OR- Six years of sign painting experience including the preparation of surfaces, design, layout, and gold or silver leaf lettering, one year of which must have been at the journey-level**.

    *In order to receive credit for the required degree/coursework, certification, and/or license, you must include a legible copy of the official diploma, official transcripts, or official letter from the accredited institution which shows the area of specialization, and/or a legible copy of the official certificate and/or license at the time of filing or within seven (7) calendar days from the date of filing application (if applicable). Failure to provide the required documentation will result in application rejection. Training programs must be recognized by a national, global, or regional accrediting agency, the California State Department of Education, the California State Department of Labor Division of Apprenticeship Standards, or the Council for Private Postsecondary, and Vocational Education.

    **Journey-level experience is defined as having fairly significant freedom from day-to-day supervision and needing little to no guidance on such matters as selecting appropriate problem-solving methods and techniques, locating appropriate regulations, or applying proper procedures to carry out work.

    License:
    A valid California Class C Driver License is required to perform job-related essential functions.

    Successful applicants for positions that require driving must obtain and present a copy of their driving record from the California State Department of Motor Vehicles before the final appointment. Applicants should not present a copy of their driving history until asked to do so by the hiring department. The County will make an individualized assessment of whether an applicant's driving history has a direct or adverse relationship with the specific duties of the job. License must not be currently suspended, restricted, or revoked.

    Physical Expectations:
    3 - Moderate. This class requires that the incumbent stand or walk most of the time with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, reaching, working on irregular surfaces, occasional lifting of objects weighing over 25 pounds, and frequent lifting of 10-25 pounds.

    Other Requirements:
    Vision: Keen color perception.

    Our Assessment Process:
    First, meet our requirements above. After that, our process includes a structured oral interview assessing knowledge and skills in the field, knowledge of computer design software and associated equipment, interpersonal skills, customer service skills, and oral communication skills weighted at 100%.

    Candidates must achieve a passing score of 70% or higher on assessment to be added onto the list of eligible candidates on the Eligible Register.

    Eligibility Information:
    The names of candidates receiving a passing score in the assessment will be placed on the Eligible Register in the order of their score group for a period of twelve (12) months following the date of promulgation. Passing this examination and being placed on the Eligible Register do not guarantee an offer of employment.

    Applications will be processed on an as-received basis and promulgated to the Eligible Register accordingly.

    No person may compete for this examination more than once every twelve (12) months.
    Special Information:
    Shift - 5/40 work schedule. Appointees may be required to work nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime.
