JOB SUMMARY: Perform the duties of an Equipment Operator for the Streets Division in the Public Works Department. Summer work hours are 6:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. four days per week. Winter work hours are 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. five days per week. Required to work on-call and overtime as needed. Must be able to work odd hours, weekends, and overtime, particularly during snow season. Responsible for mowing tractor for half of the year and filling in to all crew within Streets for half the year.
The salary range for this position is
$22.78- $30.75 per hour with a
hiring range of $22.78 - $26.76, depending on qualifications and experience.
This opportunity will be available to applicants until Friday, 1.3.25 at 12:00 P.M. M.S.T. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: - Prepares vehicle mileage reports.
- Performs routine maintenance on assigned vehicle.
- Performs a thorough pre-trip and post-trip DOT inspection of assigned equipment.
- Operates a variety of equipment such as pickup truck, tandem axel dump truck, tractor with drag box, asphalt roller, forklift, tandem axel water truck, wheel loader.
- May operate class A tractor with flatbed trailer or side dump trailer, mowing tractor, motor grader, pothole spray patcher, trackless with weed spraying attachment, street sweeper, crack-seal machine, tack trailer, roto mill, asphalt paver.
Weeds/Pothole Crew: - Responsible for right-of-way mowing and weed spraying.
- Responsible for filling potholes.
Asphalt Crew: - Fills cracks in the asphalt during the colder months.
- Roto milling and asphalt patching during the warmer months.
Alley Crew: - Responsible for the maintenance on all alleys.
- Maintenance includes leveling/ filling holes, dig out/rebuild, tree trimming.
- Preforms small concrete repairs on curb heads and medians.
- Hauls large logs for the Urban Forestry Division.
- Responsible for the maintenance of the liquid tank farm, brine machine, and the production of salt brine.
Winter Operations (All Crews): - Operates a tandem axel dump truck equipped with front snow plow side wing plow, and combination liquid/granular spreader.
- Operates liquid anti-icing/deicing tandem axel truck with front plow.
- Operates snow removal equipment on a twelve-hour shift, as designated by supervisor.
- Consolidation and removal of snow from the downtown area.
- Ice cutting for drainage issues.
- Pick-up and removal of snow piles/hazards.
- Clearing out right-of-way sidewalks
OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS: - Works with or on other Streets crews as assigned by supervisor.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS: Required Education: - High School Graduate or GED.
Preferred Experience: - Previous experience in motor-grader operation, front-end loader operation, tandem-axle dump trucks, tractor/trailer hauling, mowing operations, spraying weeds with chemicals, snow removal operation, paving and patching, crack sealing, and roto-milling operations are highly desirable.
Certifications: - Must possess a valid Class B commercial driver's license (CDL)with an Air Brake and Tanker Endorsements; class A commercial driver's license preferred.
- Must be able to obtain a Class A commercial driver's license within six (6) months if required.
- Traffic Control Technician and Flagging Certificates highly desired.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES: - Possess knowledge of road construction, repairs, and general maintenance procedures.
- Possess skill in the operation of light to medium equipment needed to construct, repair, and maintain roads.
- Possess knowledge of snow and ice control techniques, materials, and be able to operate snowplows with anti-icing/de-icing equipment.
- Must work safely and follow all established safety rules, regulations, and procedures.
- Must be able to follow oral instructions and communicate effectively with co-workers, lead workers and supervisors.
- Basic knowledge of the City's geography preferred.
- Must be able to work odd hours, weekends, and overtime, particularly during snow season.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS & WORKING CONDITIONS: - Frequent exposure to heat and noise along with working outside in the elements.
- Occasional s trenuous to extreme physical effort that includes frequent use of heavy objects (e.g., 50+ pounds) and may also use heavy tools or require strenuous application in awkward positions.
- Occasional exposure to marginal to moderate conditions that are unpredictable and may lead to injury.
Must be able to reach the Street Division’s office/shop located at 2525 West First Street within 30 minutes. Required to be on call for after hour and weekend emergency duty approximately every 12 weeks. In anticipation of adverse weather conditions, preparedness for call back is expected. Considered essential personnel required to report for duty in response to community emergencies (e.g. natural disaster, fire, flood, blizzard, etc.)
