Department of Public Health is recruiting for
Health Education Specialists I who are responsible for, or assist with, needs assessment, program planning and implementation, health campaign promotion, community organization, and evaluation of public health promotion and education activities.
Current openings exist in Opioid Response Initiative team and Environmental Health Services. The resulting eligible list from this recruitment may be used to fill current and future vacancies as they occur throughout the County.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT Travel: Travel throughout the County may be required to perform duties off-site as needed. Employees may be required to make provision for transportation and use personal vehicles (mileage reimbursement is available). At the time of hire, a valid California Class C driver license and proof of automobile liability insurance must be produced for the individual providing the transportation.
Background Investigation: Applicants selected for this position must pass a background investigation and verification of employment history and education.
Shift Availability: Incumbents may be required to work occasional evenings and/or weekends depending on assignment.
Animal Care and Control Positions: Positions assigned to the Animal Care and Control program will be located in a County animal care shelter, work with animals and be expected to interface with animal rescue/animal welfare groups.
Disaster Service Worker: Positions in DPH are designated Disaster Service Workers and may be scheduled to work after-hours, weekends and holidays to cover emergency response.
Minimum RequirementsApplicants must qualify under Option A or Option B: Option A - Degree : Possession of a Bachelor's degree (or higher) in Health Promotion and Education, Public Health/Community Health, Health Administration, Public Health Policy, Global Health, Environmental Health, Health Science, Nutrition, Epidemiology, or closely related field of study.
Option B - Education and Experience: Education: Thirty (30) semester (45 quarter) units of completed college coursework,
half of which must be upper division.
-AND- Experience: One (1) year of full-time equivalent experience in a public health department, health service provider, or community-based health organization participating in planning, developing, and implementing health promotion and education services.
* NOTE : - A list of completed college coursework must be attached with the application, if the candidate is applying under option B or does not possess a Bachelor's degree (or higher) in one (1) of the qualifying fields of study listed above.
Desired QualificationsThe ideal candidate will possess a Master's degree in a qualifying field of study and will possess the Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) and/or the Master Certified Health Education Specialist (MCHES) certificate. Additionally, the ideal candidate will possess excellent written and verbal communication skills as they relate to developing education materials and media releases, representing the program in public, and conducting presentations and trainings on a variety of health topics.
Applicants fluent in American Sign Language, Arabic, Korean, Mandarin, Spanish and/or Vietnamese are strongly encouraged to apply. Additional compensation is associated with positions requiring the use of bilingual skills. Testing of bilingual skills may be required to receive additional compensation.
