    Position Description
    Directs, plans, coordinates and supervises the operation and activities of a specialized unit or small department; develops and implements policies and procedures, administers the budget, organizes tasks and sets priorities. Serves as liaison with university personnel and community at large. Works under general supervision with broad latitude for initiative and independent judgment.

    Major/Essential Functions
    Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center and the Office of Research and Innovation is seeking a highly motivated Director of Special Projects to oversee and execute strategic initiatives across multiple departments and functions. This role requires expertise in mixed methods research, needs assessment, and program management evaluation, as well as a proven ability to collaborate with high-level administrators and faculty. The Director of Reseach Special Projects will report to the Senior Vice President for Research and lead a complex NIH-funded project to assess and improve institutional research capacity, ensure alignment with institutional goals, and timely completion and impactful results.

    Project Management
    • Plan, execute, and oversee strategic projects to advance the university's mission in research.
    • Develop detailed project timelines, budgets, and resource allocation plans.
    • Identify project goals, objectives, and key performance indicators (KPIs) in collaboration with stakeholders.
    Mixed Methods Research and Evaluation
    • Design and conduct mixed-methods studies (quantitative and qualitative) to inform project planning and implementation.
    • Lead needs assessments to identify gaps in university programs, policies, and services related to research.
    • Implement program evaluation frameworks to assess the effectiveness and impact of special initiatives, delivering actionable insights to stakeholders.
    Stakeholder Engagement and Communication
    • Facilitate meetings, workshops, and focus groups with senior administrators, faculty, staff, and external partners.
    • Prepare high-quality presentations, reports, and briefs tailored to various audiences, including senior leadership and board members.
    Data Analysis and Reporting
    • Use advanced analytical tools and techniques to evaluate program performance and outcomes.
    • Present findings in clear, visually compelling formats to support data-driven decision-making.
    • Produce comprehensive reports documenting project progress, results, and recommendations.
    Strategic Leadership
    • Identify opportunities for innovation and improvement in academic and administrative processes.
    • Provide thought leadership on best practices in program evaluation, needs assessment, and project management.
    • Contribute to the development of policies and procedures that enhance institutional effectiveness.


    Required Qualifications
    Bachelor's degree in related area required plus five years progressively responsible management experience. Additional education may substitute for experience on a year for year basis.
