    San Bernardino County seeks a skilled and motivated professional to serve as the Director of Legislative Affairs. This dynamic role offers an exciting opportunity for a driven, strategic thinker to lead impactful legislative programs within a forward-thinking organization and collaborate on advocacy efforts that advance the County’s priorities.

    As a vital member of the County’s esteemed leadership team, the Director of Legislative Affairs oversees legislative initiatives, including both in-house and contracted lobbying, in Sacramento and Washington, D.C., complementing the external advocacy and relationship building managed by the Government Relations Director. Reporting directly to the County’s Chief Financial Officer, the Director plays a critical role in monitoring, analyzing, and responding to legislation and regulations that impact the County. The successful candidate will work closely with executive leadership, the Board of Supervisors, and key stakeholders to develop legislative strategies that align with the County’s goals and priorities.

    The Director of Legislative Affairs is responsible for leading the County’s legislative strategy and ensuring that legislative advocacy is rooted in sound policy analysis and strategic planning, priorities and platform, assisting the Board of Supervisors and the Chief Executive Officer in strategy development. The Director and their team evaluate and analyze the potential impacts of proposed legislation and regulations at the local, state, and federal levels. Additionally, the Director will provide insightful recommendations and guidance, considering political dynamics and legislative alternatives, and ensure a seamless flow of information between the County and its advocacy teams.

    This position offers a competitive salary range of $140,025 -$198,536 annually depending on qualifications, plus a valuable and comprehensive benefits package that includes:

    • $12,000 Annually for Automobile Allowance
    • $2,400 Annually for Portable Device Allowance
    • Up to $10,000 for Eligible Tuition Loan Repayment
    • 457(b) Deferred Compensation with County Contribution
    • 401(k) Defined Compensation with County Contribution
    • 80 Hours of Administrative Leave
    • 160 Hours of Accrued Paid Vacation
    • Unlimited Sick Time Accrual
    • Medical, Dental, and Vision Coverage for Employees and Eligible Dependents.


    This position is in the Unclassified Service salary range 83B.

    Minimum Requirements

    Education: Bachelor’s degree in political science, public/business administration, communications, law, or other closely related field; a Master’s degree is desired.

    Experience: Must have a minimum of 3 years of management and leadership experience representing the interests of an organization or public entity to legislators and government regulators; experience should include developing, analyzing, and tracking legislation; overseeing legislative strategy and advocacy; and working with governmental agencies at the federal, state, and local level to develop policies and procedures and coordinate programs and legislative activities. Candidates should possess senior-level legislative affairs experience, preferably with a complex and multi-faceted agency.

    Candidates with experience addressing key issues at local, state, or federal levels are encouraged to apply, especially those familiar with Washington, D.C. legislative affairs or the California Legislature. Relevant executive or administrative level experience in legislative affairs, public relations, or other relevant fields may also be considered subject to Human Resources and executive leadership review.

This leader will possess exceptional communication skills, political acumen, and a proactive approach to managing legislative priorities in a fast-paced and evolving environment to align legislative initiatives with broader County objectives.
