    Major Duties

    Under general supervision, the groundsworker is responsible for general gardening work and the maintenance of an assigned grounds area in Student Housing that includes, but is not limited to, cultivation of the landscape, trash removal from the planter, parking lots, and around the trash bins. The incumbent operates and performs minor maintenance on gardening power equipment, hoes, cultivates and removes weeds, seeds lawns, fertilizes, plants and maintains plants.
    • Keeps the assigned area, including walkways, safe and free of trash and debris, and ensures that lawns are mowed, bushes are edged, and weeds are pulled.
    • Trims low tree limbs and shrubs and makes minor irrigation repairs.
    • Maintains equipment and gardening tools, ensures the clean and safe handling of all grounds equipment and supplies, and drive carts and pickup truck to move equipment between locations.
    • Performs other duties as assigned.

    Qualifications
    • One (1) year of experience in the care and maintenance of landscaped areas, in general grounds maintenance work, or in related manual labor.
    • LICENSE: CANDIDATE MUST POSSESS A VALID CALIFORNIA DRIVER’S LICENSE.


    Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
    • Thorough knowledge of: general gardening and grounds maintenance methods; proper methods of planting, cultivating, and caring for hedges, ornamental trees, shrubs, lawns, and flowers, and the use and care of gardening materials, tools, and equipment.
    • Ability to: recognize the more common species of ornamental shrubs, trees and flowers grown in California; perform strenuous physical work as described in this classification; utilize mechanical aptitude and motor coordination; learn to skillfully operate small trucks and power-driven grounds equipment; read and write at a level appropriate to the duties of the position; and follow simple oral and written instructions.


    Pay, Benefits, & Work Schedule
    • The university offers an excellent benefits package, including but not limited to: medical, dental, vision, retirement & savings, tuition waiver and more.
    • Classification: Groundsworker / 0731 / 1
    • The anticipated HIRING RANGE: $3722 - $3892 per month, dependent upon qualifications and experience. The salary range for this classification is: $3722 - $5840 per month.
    • HOURS: Full Time; 40 hours per week; Monday through Friday.
    • This is a Regular position with a one-year probationary period.
    • The individual hired for this role will physically work on-campus in Northridge. This is not a telecommute position.
