Minimum Qualifications
- Graduation with a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in Engineering or in a field related to the job, plus eight (8) years of experience in engineering, including six (6) years of experience which were acquired after licensing as a professional engineer and including four (4) years of experience before or after licensing which were in a supervisory capacity.
- Graduation with a Master’s degree from an accredited college or university can substitute for up to one (1) year of experience.
- Graduation with a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree from an accredited college or university can substitute for up to two (2) years of experience.
Licenses or Certifications: Licensed Professional Engineer (P.E.) in the State of Texas; or if currently licensed in another state, must have the ability to obtain a Texas P.E. license within six (6) months of employment.

The City of Austin Transportation and Public Works Department is seeking to fill a
Managing Engineer position for the Project Delivery Division. The primary focus of this position is to effectively deliver a wide-range of Capital Projects including but not limited to Mobility Bond projects, speed management, Vision Zero, CAMPO grants, and future projects funded by the Street Impact Fee. The Managing Engineer will work across divisions to forecast project needs, identify appropriate delivery mechanisms and be accountable for timely project delivery. The Project Delivery Managing Engineer will report to the Assistant Director for Transportation Engineering Services and work closely with colleague’s portfolio; Transportation Engineering, Active Transportation and Street Design, Vision Zero, and Project Delivery and with the Transportation and Public Works Department Executive Team. The Managing Engineer will also work closely with Capital Delivery Services where TPW serves as the sponsor for large capital projects.
The ideal Managing Engineer will be an innovative leader with demonstrated ability to provide strategic leadership, to “see the big picture”, and present a collaborative personality. This experienced leader will bring expertise in developing and enhancing work-flow processes, developing and mentoring staff, fostering creative problem-solving, and accountability. They will also have experience evaluating departmental structures, staffing, and operations with a desire to maintain and enhance a highly-responsive, creative, and high-morale workforce.
The following knowledge, skills, and abilities are desired:
- Knowledge of City of Austin or similar local agency permitting processes.
- Knowledge of transportation planning and traffic engineering practices, principles, modeling tools and cost estimates.
- Ability to provide technical input and strategic direction to multiple work teams including external stakeholders, partner agencies, etc., to successfully deliver high-need, time-critical projects.
- Excellent team working and problem-solving skills with internal and external members to accomplish organizational goals.

- Strong program management background and prior experience working for a transportation organization.

Duties, Functions and Responsibilities
Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Reviews, evaluates, and prepares replies to technical and management audits. Is the interdivisional liaison for coordinating the various phases of designing, planning, and preparation of project details. Investigates and resolves complaints from the public. Develops and implements standard operating procedures, policies, and ordinances by applying advance technical and managerial knowledge and applying changes to meet departmental business goals and objectives.
