    Minimum Qualifications

    • Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent, plus one (1) year experience in a field related to the job
    • Thirty semester hours of college credit in power technology, electronics, communications technology, engineering technology, industrial technology or related field may substitute for one year of the general required experience with a maximum substitution of one year.

    Under close supervision, perform installation, removal, repair and testing of electrical meters.

    The Meter Electrician I will inspect, install, test, troubleshoot, repair, verify and calibrate all types of metering to include as follows; large capacity and primary and generation station meter equipment, transformer rated, single phase and three phase meters, recorders, totalizers, power analyzers, communication devices, and AMI network devices. Perform related duties such as interpret phase angles and power factor calculations. Install, test and repair or remove all load management equipment. Provide assistance to other Metering Operations employees and internal/external customers. Perform down to board level repair, diagnosis, programming, verifying, interrogating, testing and calibration of metering installations, monitoring devices and associated components. Interpret, update, and develop drawings and documentation for meter equipment and installations of all types.

    Work Schedule:
    • This position is categorized as Essential Personnel with the City of Austin. Essential staff are required to work during emergencies or bad weather if they are scheduled to work and, in some cases, when they are not scheduled. Essential employees ensure the continuance of key operations for the City of Austin.
    • Work hours may include after hours, holidays, and weekends
    • Shifts may change according to departmental needs.
    • Employee may be required to work additional hours outside of regular work schedule.
    Pay Range
    $27.41 - $33.30

    • Four years electrical experience working as an electrician.
    • Experience installing electrical metering devices.
    • Experience with service equipment and power tools.
    • Experience answering citizen questions and providing assistance to them.

    • Experience maintaining accurate records and entering data in electronic systems.
    Duties, Functions and Responsibilities

    Install electrical metering devices. Check, clean, service equipment, pumps, power tools, etc. Operate electronic testing equipment. Record data on appropriate documentation. Answer citizen questions and provide assistance.

    Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.

    • Knowledge of methods, procedures, tools and equipment in testing electrical and electronic metering devices.
    • Knowledge of safety rules and procedures when working with energized electrical systems.
    • Knowledge of installation, operation, and maintenance of electrical equipment, apparatus, and instruments.
    • Skill in use of tools and various types of test equipment required to test, calibrate electric and electronic meters.
    • Skill in making time calculations to determine meter adjustments.
    • Skill in maintaining accurate records of solar and electronic readings.
    • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with other city employees and the general public.
    • Skill in bench-testing various types of metering devices.
    • Skill in reading, interpreting, and preparing electric and electronic diagrams and instruments.
    • Skill in the use of tools and equipment used in the installation and repair of electric meters.
    • Skill in disassembling and repairing meters in the field using hand tools.
    • Skill in drawing schematics of control circuits.

    City Government
