    Job Summary

    Performs routine maintenance and simple repairs on City grounds and facilities involving trades such as carpentry, plumbing, basic electrical, construction repairs, and HVAC services. May assist journey level trades person with complex repairs involving a trade. Collects trash, picks up bulky items, and repairs trash containers. Maintains and cleans beaches, parking structures and other City grounds and facilitates. Performs related work as required.

    *The eligible list that will be established as a result of this recruitment will be used to fill permanent (full time and part time), temporary as-needed and/or on-call Maintenance Worker vacancies that occur in the City during the life of the list.

    Representative Duties

    NOTE: (Duties may vary dependent upon assignment.)

    Responds to work order assignments to pick up bulky and large trash items from residential and commercial customers. May assist in maneuvering trash/recycling/organic containers to be serviced.

    Responds to trash pick-up requests. Hauls, labels and stores abandoned belongings

    Performs routine building and grounds work, including minor maintenance and repairs to City facilities and refers problems to appropriate staff. May assist journey level tradesperson with complex repairs.

    Sweeps and picks up litter from walkways, streets, alleys, sidewalks, beach, City owned parking structures and other public areas including bus stops.

    Performs a variety of custodial duties including cleaning, disinfecting and replenishing supplies in restrooms. Sweeps, cleans and washes floors, walls, and open space.

    Installs, changes and removes fences, gates, doors, bollards, ceiling tiles, and other hardware at public facilities. Assists with resetting fuses, light fixtures, and washing HVAC chiller coils.

    Ensures that facilities doors, gates and windows are secure. Assists with boarding up windows and doors, if necessary.

    Operates steam cleaning equipment. Drives City vehicles including medium to large trucks, and small utility vehicles requiring a Class C driver’s license. Carries out routine inspections of equipment and vehicles.

    Performs roadside groundskeeping duties which may include sweeping, mowing, and trimming hedges.

    Loads, hauls, and disposes of trash, debris, and heavy objects.

    Patches up and paints small areas.

    Unplugs restroom clogs, checks plumbing fixtures, and identifies plumbing problems.

    Follows applicable safety rules and regulations.

    Performs other duties as assigned.

    Requirements

    Knowledge of:

    Safe work practices and procedures

    Hand and gardening power tools and equipment

    Cleaning tools, solutions and cleaning equipment

    General construction practices

    Basic vehicle and equipment maintenance

    Basic mathematics

    Effective customer service techniques

    Ability to:

    Perform simple basic trade and construction repairs

    Safely and properly operate power and heavy equipment, such as jackhammers, power and chain saws, skip loaders, backhoes, dump trucks, and power root cutters

    Perform physical labor for sustained periods

    Read maps, charts, blueprints and gauges

    Perform simple mathematical calculations

    Take accurate measurements

    Follow oral and written instructions

    Work in non-permit confined spaces Lift and carry heavy objects

    Establish and maintain effective and cooperative working relationships with City employees and the general public

    Provide effective customer service

    REQUIREMENTS

    Minimum Qualifications:

    Education: High school graduation or the equivalent.

    Experience: One year of recent, paid work experience performing general construction, maintenance or repair work which has included heavy physical labor.

    Licenses and Certificates:

    Possession of a valid Class C driver license.

    WORKING CONDITIONS

    Work is regularly performed outside in seasonal climate, variable weather conditions. Work requires exposure to slippery surfaces, vibrations, noise, dust, dirt, odors, chemicals, biohazards, and occasional unsanitary conditions. Required to work evenings, weekends and holidays and during emergencies, as assigned. Physical demands include working in confined spaces, repetitive bending, kneeling, reaching, climbing and standing. Must be able to lift heavy objects, and push and pull heavy containers.

    NOTE: The exam is tentatively scheduled for J anuary 23, 2025

    If three or more qualified City employees apply and pass the examination, a promotional list will be established in addition to an open-competitive list. If fewer than three qualified City employees pass the examination, the appointing authority, in accordance with the City's civil service rules and regulations, can decline to use a promotional list, in which case a promotional list will not be established for this position.

    Background Investigation:

    Candidates who have successfully completed all prior phases of the selection process will be subject to a thorough background investigation.
