    Job Summary

    Provides custodial services at a variety of City facilities, including buildings, beach and park restrooms, the Santa Monica Pier, the Civic Auditorium, and maintenance work areas.

    Under close supervision, performs and plans routine work alone. Detailed instructions are provided and work is regularly reviewed.

    *This recruitment will establish an eligibility list for permanent full-time, permanent part-time, and as-needed positions city-wide for this classification and will be used to fill future vacancies.

    Representative Duties

    Duties may vary depending on assignment.

    Cleans and dusts office areas.

    Cleans and disinfects restrooms.

    Cleans, dusts, and polishes furniture and other woodwork. Polishes brass fixtures.

    Cleans and washes walls, windows and mirrors.

    Stocks and replenishes restrooms with supplies.

    Collects and removes trash. Clears debris from walkways, pier decks, tennis courts, bike paths, and roadways. Cleans debris from rooftops and gutters.

    Cleans kitchens and snack bars. Cleans stoves, ovens, refrigerators, sink areas, microwave ovens and cupboards.

    Sweeps, dusts and mops floors. Washes, strips, and buffs floors when needed. Vacuums and shampoos carpets.

    Moves furniture, boxes and any other heavy items. Sets up tables, chairs and furniture for events.

    Secures buildings, including doors, gates, and windows.

    Orders cleaning supplies. Replaces various light bulbs.

    May drive a City vehicle or other small utility vehicle.

    Performs minor maintenance and repairs to City facilities and equipment or refers problems to appropriate staff.

    Follows applicable safety rules and regulations.

    Cleans at special events.

    Assists in feeding prisoners and performing laundry duties, if assigned to the jail.

    Cleans bus interiors, if assigned to the Transit Maintenance division.

    Moves loaded trash bins to a trash compactor for removal.

    Performs other related duties, as assigned.

    Requirements

    Knowledge of:
    Cleaning tools, solutions and cleaning equipment.
    Safe lifting and work practices.
    Basic mathematics.
    Effective customer service techniques.

    Ability to:
    Follow oral and written instructions in English.
    Perform continuous physical labor, including bending and lifting.
    Operate power cleaning equipment, such as buffers, steam cleaners, scrubbers, and vacuums.
    Mix and measure solvents and chemicals.
    May be required to learn simple plumbing, painting and carpentry repair techniques.
    Clean continuously in large crowds.
    Provide effective customer service.
    Establish and maintain effective and cooperative working relationships with City employees and the public.

    Skill in:
    Reading and understanding labels, directions and work orders.
    Dealing with the public in a courteous manner.

    Education, Training and Experience :
    Sufficient training and experience to read, write and communicate at a level reasonable for successful job performance.

    Six months of recent, paid janitorial experience which has included the use of power cleaning equipment. One year experience in the City of Santa Monica's Trades Intern program may substitute for six months of recent, paid janitorial experience. Experience providing customer service in municipal government is desirable.

    Licenses and Certificates :
    Possession of a valid class C driver license.

    WORKING CONDITIONS:
    Work may be performed both inside and/or outside in climatic weather conditions. Job requires regular exposure to dust, odors, and cleaning chemicals. High elevations, slippery surfaces, cramped positions, may be encountered. Assignments may be on evening or graveyard shifts and may require work on weekends. Physical demands include lifting and/or carrying objects weighing up to 50 pounds, and bending. Some assignments may require working among large crowds and at special events.

    If three or more qualified City employees apply and pass the examination, a promotional list will be established in addition to an open-competitive list. If fewer than three qualified City employees pass the examination, the appointing authority, in accordance with the City's civil service rules and regulations, can decline to use a promotional list, in which case a promotional list will not be established for this position.

    Background Investigation:
    Candidates who have successfully completed all prior phases of the selection process will be subject to a thorough background investigation.
