    • Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent, plus four (4) years experience in a field related to electric system operations, of whichtwo (2) yearswere in a lead or supervisory capacity.
    • Associates Degree focused on GIS , Power, and Computer Technology or other related field may substitute for one (1) year of experience.


    Licenses or Certifications:
    • NERC Operators Certification


    Physical Requirements:
    Light. Tasks performed with lightweight materials or using a force equal to lifting up to twenty pounds.

    Position Description:
    The Electrical System Controller Supervisor is classified as Essential and will work for our Electric Service Delivery ( ESD ) Division. Responsible for the full range of supervisory activities including selection, training, evaluation, counseling, and recommendation for dismissal. The Electrical System Controller Supervisor position under Austin Energy will require a commitment to serve the public, ensures that actions meet public needs; aligns organizational objectives and practices with public interests. This position requires a self-starter, solid work ethic, punctuality, peer to peer relationships, and conflict resolution and will be the first line of coaching for employees as it relates to work assignments and providing technical guidance.

    Work Schedule/Essential:
    • This has been designated as an Essential Employee position. In the event of a City-designated emergency, Essential Employees provide services that impact the public health, safety, utility services, and welfare of members of the Austin community and other employees and ensure the continuity of essential operations. In such an emergency, Essential Employees may be called back in, may be required to modify their schedule, may be assigned to a City-designated work site, or may be retained on site to assist with operations and recovery.
    • The top candidate who will be considered for employment in this position must comply with the following:
    This position requires to work 7 days a week working a 12 hour rotating shift. Must be available to work days and nights, weekends, and/or holidays 24/7-365. Must have the ability to bend, lift, walk, and carry or using a force equal to lifting twenty (20) pounds.
    Fair Labor Standards Act:

    This position is classified as NON - EXEMPT .
    Pay Range
    $48.38 - $62.90

    Hours
    This position requires working a 12 hour rotating shift 7 days a week.

    Additional hours are required to include weekends and holidays.

    Preferred Experience:
    • Experience working with NERC reliability standards and how they affect the electric utility with Distribution and Transmission.
    • Experience working in Austin Energy’s Control Room.
    • Experience preparing and planning emergency action plans through Incident Command.
    • Lead experience directly working with electric system operations.
    • Supervisory experience directly working with electric system operations.
    • Leadership skills in conflict management, employee development, developing others.
    Duties, Functions and Responsibilities
    Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.


    Analyzes controller actions to determine correctness of operation. Resolves customer complaints and problems. Ensure accurate and effective outage reporting to both internal and external customers. Interprets, explains, and enforces city practice, policy, and procedure. Assists in development and implementation of system operating procedures. Reviews and prepares daily, weekly, and monthly activity reports. Coordinates division/section activities with other division/sections/utilities. Resolves division/section conflicts with other division/sections. Responsible for monitoring, analyzing and troubleshooting system disturbances, determine methods to restore the electric power grid to pre-disturbance condition. Responsible to maintain working knowledge of the Emergency Action Plans including the Blackstart Plan, Load Shedding Procedures and Incident Command activation.

    • Responsible for the full range of supervisory activities including selection, training, evaluation, counseling, and recommendation for dismissal
    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
    Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.


    • Knowledge of supervisory and management techniques.
    • Knowledge of electric utility system restoration procedures.
    • Knowledge of procedures and methods used in energy control center operations.
    • Knowledge of City overhead and underground power transmission and distribution systems, inter-ties and
    • critical areas.
    • Knowledge of switching equipment procedures and regulations governing its operation.
    • Skill in directing others in procedures designed to correct outages or safely reroute power.
    • Skill in effective planning and scheduling of complex construction, maintenance and repair activities.
    • Skill in solving problems during emergencies, related to, the transmission and distribution electric systems.
    • Ability to work with frequent interruptions and changes in priorities.
    • Ability to train others.
    • Ability to quickly recognize and analyze irregular events.
