    The Sheriff 's Office is comprised of the Administration, Corrections and Enforcement Operation Bureaus. The Sheriff’s Office delivers public safety to the residents of Monterey County by providing 24-hour uniformed patrol, investigations, custody services, court security, and law enforcement support.

    The Sheriff’s Property Technician is assigned to the Enforcement Operations Bureau, Forensics Services Unit responsible for receiving, cataloging, storing, maintaining, controlling, releasing, and/or destroying property, evidence, or other items that have been recovered. The ideal candidate will have the ability to communicate effectively, exercise independent judgment and initiative in managing the property room.

    The Eligible List established by this recruitment process may be used to fill current and future vacancies on a regular full-time, part-time, or temporary basis.

    Examples of Duties

    • Receives, catalogues, stores, maintains, controls, releases, and/or destroys property, evidence, or other items that have been recovered, found or are being held as evidence in connection with the prosecution of crimes
    • Maintains files and chain-of-evidence records regarding property and its disposition
    • May transport evidence to or from satellite locations and to the Crime Laboratory for analysis
    • Contacts or responds to questions from law enforcement personnel, attorneys, representatives of various agencies and the public concerning the release, location and disposition of property and evidence

    THE SUCCESSFULL CANDIDATE
    Will have a proven track record demonstrating the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:

    Thorough Knowledge of :
    • Basic inventory techniques
    • Modern office equipment, including computer and applicable software programs sufficient to complete required duties
    Working Knowledge of :
    • Modern record keeping and filing systems associated with receiving and storing inventory
    • Basic arithmetic calculations and functions
    Skill and Ability to :
    • Safely handle heavy items and those containing chemical or biological hazards
    • Maintain accurate and highly organized records and property/evidence
    • Maintain confidentiality
    • Understand written and oral instructions
    • Effectively use a computer, including report writing and research
    • Maintain cooperative relationships with coworkers, the public, and all others contacted through the course of work; respond in a positive manner to supervision and direction; and attend and perform duties on a regular, reliable and consistent basis
    • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing
    • Lift and carry heavy and bulky items
    • Deal tactfully with persons from a variety of cultural, educational, and occupational backgrounds who may be experiencing stressful situations


    Examples of Experience/Education/Training

    Any combination of training, education and/or experience which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities and required conditions of employment is qualifying. An example of a way these requirements might be acquired is:

    Education :
    Equivalent to graduation from high school; AND

    Experience :
    One year of experience performing inventory and record keeping duties.

    Conditions of Employment:
    The required conditions of employment include, but are not limited to the following:
    • Possess a valid California Class C Driver’s License at the time of hire and maintain a satisfactory driving record
    • Successfully pass and complete a thorough background/suitability process which includes a polygraph examination or voice-stress analysis
    • Provide the department with a telephone number or other means of immediate contact
    • Be available to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and during times of disaster and/or emergency
