Fresno County Sheriff's Office is offering an exciting career opportunity for a dynamic individual with exceptional analytical skills interested in a position as a
Criminalist I.
The Sheriff-Coroner-Public Administrator's Office, under the administration of an elected Sheriff-Coroner-Public Administrator, is responsible for the enforcement of all public safety laws within the County of Fresno. In addition, the Sheriff-Coroner-Public Administrator's Office is responsible for the detention of incarcerated persons as required by state, federal and case law, and applicable regulations.
The
Criminalist I, reporting to a Supervising Criminalist, examines, tests, and analyzes physical evidence materials, such as physiological fluids, firearms, and a variety of organic and non-organic matter, primarily in a laboratory setting. Responsibilities include conducting chemical tests and experiments; blood typing; transferring evidence; operating and adjusting laboratory equipment; preparing court/trial evidence, and testifying in court.
Please note : The eligible list established from this recruitment will be used to fill current and future vacancies as they occur and may also be used to fill both extra help and permanently allocated positions. Individuals selected for extra help appointment may be transitioned to a permanently allocated position at a later date as authorized by the Fresno County Personnel Rules.
As a condition of employment with the Sheriff-Coroner-Public Administrator's Office, candidates must undergo and pass a thorough and rigid background investigation, polygraph or Computer Voice Stress Analysis examination, and medical and psychological examinations (background materials for failed candidates are retained for three years). The background investigation includes employment/credit histories, arrest/criminal records, drug/alcohol use, and personal conduct. This list is neither inclusive nor exclusive; other relevant areas may be investigated and verified.Positions in this classification are in MEDICAL GROUP IV - Safety Officer: This group includes law enforcement positions which are covered by the Safety Officer provisions of the County's retirement plan. Sound physical condition in all respects is required because of exposure to and need to counteract and control, violent action or behavior. Heavy physical activity as described in Medical Group III may be encountered occasionally to frequently depending upon specific assignments and emergency situations.

Education : Possession of a bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Physics, Criminalistics, or a closely related natural science field that is acceptable within the United States' accredited college or university system. The degree must include a minimum of twenty-four (24) semester units of General Chemistry, Quantitative Analysis, and Organic Chemistry with a lab.
Experience : One (1) year of full-time, paid work experience involving the use of laboratory equipment and materials in the performance of chemical and microscopic tests and experiments.
License : Possession of a valid Class "C" driver's license, or equivalent.

SELECTION PROCESS :
Depending upon the number of applicants meeting the minimum qualifications and filing requirements, applicants may be scheduled for one of the processes listed below:
- Written Examination - If required, the written examination will be offered in an online format. Please indicate on the supplemental questionnaire if you have the ability to complete an online examination.
- Oral Examination - An oral examination includes a panel consisting of at least two members within a similar field of expertise as the vacancy. Candidates are asked structured questions and must respond orally to allow the panel to evaluate the specific qualifications of each applicant. If required, the oral examination will be administered in an online format.
- Certify Without Examination - In instances where the number of eligible candidates is less than or equal to the number of qualified applicants the Department is entitled to receive under Personnel Rule 4212, the competitive examination process will be waived and the names will be certified without an examination.
Successful candidates will be placed on an employment list effective for a minimum of 3 months (may be extended up to 12 months) and certified in final rank order as vacancies occur.
