  • Job Description

    Description

    Under moderate supervision, maintains the cleanliness of various Metro locations.

    Examples of Duties

    • Operates vacuum cleaners and shampooing machines to clean carpets
    • Sweeps, mops, strips, and scrubs hallways and stairs, and floors; operates buffing machines to wax floors
    • Lifts, moves, and empties trash and garbage containers; replaces discarded plastic bags with new bags
    • Cleans walls, windows, and ceilings
    • Dusts office furnishings
    • Cleans and sanitizes restrooms, including removing graffiti from bathroom walls using heavy-duty chemical cleansers
    • Cleans and maintains tools and equipment used
    • Lifts, moves, and replaces emptied bottles of water with full bottles
    • Moves office furniture and other equipment as necessary to facilitate cleaning operation
    • Moves custodial equipment and supplies between or within Metro facilities
    • Notifies management of need for repairs
    • Operates Metro vehicles to transport equipment and supplies to various Metro locations
    • Operates forklift to move trash or supplies as required
    • Contributes to ensuring that the Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) policies and programs of Metro are carried out

    Minimum Qualifications

    A combination of education and/or experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the position. Additional experience, as outlined below, may be substituted for required education on a year-for-year basis. A typical combination includes:

    • None required

    Experience
    • One year of relevant full-time experience performing custodial work

    Certifications/Licenses/Special Requirements
    • Valid California Class C Driver License
    • Ability to obtain a permit to operate forklifts may be required for some positions Must comply with all California Occupational Safety and Health Administration (Cal/OSHA) regulations and utilize approved safety equipment and personal protective gear including, but not limited to, respirators, eye and hearing protective devices (HPD), if and when required


    Essential Knowledge

    Knowledge of(defined as a learned body of information that is required for and applied in the performance of job tasks)
    • Methods, materials, equipment, and safety procedures utilized in custodial work

    Skill in(defined as the proficient manual, verbal, or mental utilization of data, people, or things)
    • Safely operating buffing, vacuuming, ceiling cleaning, shampooing, and auto-scrubbing equipment
    • Communicating effectively with others

    Ability to(defined as a present competence to perform an observable behavior or produce an observable result)
    • Understand and follow oral and written instructions and procedures
    • Learn and carry out Metro's custodial procedures
    • Tolerate exposure to cleaning agents and fumes
    • Perform moderate physical labor
    • Independently lift and move objects weighing up to 55 pounds; lift and move objects weighing over 55 pounds with assistance
    • Read, write, speak, and understand English

    Physical Effort Required
    • Standing
    • Walking (distance 5' to 100')
    • Crawling, crouching, squatting, stooping and/or kneeling
    • Bending or twisting at the neck, waist and/or knees
    • Pushing and/or pulling
    • Moderate lifting or carrying 26-50 lbs.
    • Heavy lifting or carrying 51 lbs. or more with assistance
    • Handling by seizing, holding, grasping, or turning hands, but without finger dexterity
    • Reaching by extending hand(s) and/or arm(s) in any direction
    • Using equipment requiring high hand and finger dexterity
    • Safely use sharp objects and tools
    • Communicating through speech in the English language required
    • Good distance vision and/or depth perception to judge distances
