    The Position

    Building Construction Inspectors perform a variety of building construction inspections and contract administration work requiring a broad knowledge of construction principles and practices of all phases of construction including plumbing, heating, electrical, structural design, air conditioning and landscaping.

    Under general supervision, incumbents either: 1) perform some or all of the duties described in the series concept and work on projects of lesser complexity which do not require inspection of all phases of building construction. Examples of projects inspected at this level include office renovations, construction or modification of storage facilities, installation/removal of storage tanks, air conditioning units and other fixtures, and a variety of retrofit projects. Positions may be permanently allocated to this class; or 2) function in a continuing trainee capacity and are assigned to assist in major, multi-million-dollar construction projects. Incumbents may progress to Building Construction Inspector III upon meeting the minimum qualifications, satisfactory performance, and with the approval of the appointing authority.

    This position is with the State Public Works Division in Reno, Nevada. This recruitment will be used to underfill the Building Construction Inspector (BCI) 3 position. Under the direction of the BCI 4 Supervisor and in cooperation with State Public Works project managers, this position is responsible for building inspections. The incumbent will perform duties at journey level for all disciplines of construction for buildings and structures on State of Nevada owned property. The incumbent will be conducting field and site inspections throughout a regional territory. The incumbent will ensure compliance with construction documents, all applicable codes, will perform inspections for plumbing, mechanical, electrical, accessibility, structural design, building, and landscaping.     To Qualify:

    In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
    Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications) Graduation from high school or equivalent education, three years of journey level building construction experience, one year which included building construction inspection experience in one or more of the construction trades; OR one year of experience as a Building Construction Inspector I in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above. Special Requirements Some positions require certification as a Plans Examiner, in accordance with NRS 278.570, at the time of application and as a condition of continuing employment. These positions will be designated at the time of recruitment. Current certification as a Commercial Building Inspector is required at the time of application and as a condition of continuing employment for the Building Construction Inspector III. An additional certification in at least one other construction trade (e.g., plumbing, electrical, mechanical, or accessibility) is required at the time of application and as a condition of continuing employment for the Commercial Building Inspector III for positions within the State Public Works Division. A valid drivers license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment. Pursuant to NRS 284.4066, this position has been identified as affecting public safety. Persons offered employment in this position must first submit to a pre-employment screening test for controlled substances. The Examination Application Evaluation Exam The exam will consist of an application evaluation. It is essential that applications include detailed information with time frames regarding education and experience. The most qualified applicants will be contacted by the hiring agency for interview.
