    Prior to the impact of COVID, the Norman Y. Mineta San José International Airport (SJC) served more than 15 million passengers annually with 450 peak daily departures and arrivals on 13 international and domestic carriers to 50+ nonstop destinations.     Position Duties

    San José Mineta International Airport is currently recruiting for an Airport Operations Superintendent I/II. Newly hired Superintendents can expect to be assigned to one of four sections of Airport Operations. The current vacancy is in the Security Compliance section.

    Airport Operations Superintendent I/II may be assigned to or rotate amongst sections within the Airport Operations Division including Airside, Landside, Terminal/Customer Service, or Security Sections. Programs within these sections over which the Airport Operations Superintendent I/II may have managerial responsibilities include airfield operations, Manager-On-Duty, noise monitoring, emergency planning, general aviation, public parking, airport shuttle and ground transportation, parking and curbside traffic control, terminal management, customer experience and services, security compliance, airport identification badging, and Airport Operations Center (AOC) functions.

    This position may require the supervision of a large number of staff and requires an individual who can provide a high level of leadership and supervision. Additionally, the position may interact regularly with Airport customers, contractors, tenants, government agencies, and other City departments. Successful candidates must demonstrate excellent communication skills, program/project management capabilities, and the ability to handle confidential and sensitive information.

    The Airport Operations Superintendent I/II positions typically work Monday through Friday day shifts, but may periodically work different shifts, covering twenty-four hours per day, seven days per week, including weekends and holidays, to ensure subordinate staff receive appropriate supervision. The Airport Operations Superintendent I/II position also provides twenty-four hours per day, seven days per week, including weekends and holidays, stand-by support to vended services and the Manager-on-Duty position.

    This position requires the ability to interpret complex regulations and a strong knowledge of various computer programs and software such as Microsoft Office as well as variety of proprietary computer systems, databases, and software. A strong technical background or a demonstrated ability to learn new technology is preferred. Previous, demonstrated work experience in Airport Operations at a Certificated Commercial Service Airport is highly desired.

    The final candidate’s qualifications and experience shall determine the actual salary. In addition to the starting salary, employees in this classification shall also receive an approximate five percent (5%) ongoing non-pensionable compensation pay, which is included in the range below.

    The Airport Operations Superintendent I salary range is $ 125,077.68 - $152,377.6 annually.
    The Airport Operations Superintendent II salary range is $ 144,646.32 - $176,226.96 annually.

    Competencies:
    The ideal candidate will possess the following competencies, as demonstrated in past and current employment history. Desirable competencies for this position include:

    • Job Expertise - Demonstrates knowledge of and experience with applicable professional/technical principles and practices, Citywide and departmental procedures/policies and federal and state rules and regulations. Knowledge of:
    • Certification inspection requirements and the regulations governing an airport that is part of the National Transportation System used by air carrier aircraft under authority of the Federal government.
    • Federal, state, and local rules and regulations pertaining to airport operations and airport certification requirements.
    • Practices and procedures of all airside, security, terminal and landside activities and functions.
    • Safe vehicle operations at an airport.
    • Communication Skills - Effectively conveys information and expresses thoughts and facts clearly, orally and in writing; demonstrates effective use of listening skills and displays openness to other people's ideas and thoughts.
    • Computer Skills - Experienced with common business computer applications including but not limited to: MS Outlook, MS Word, MS PowerPoint, MS Access, and MS Excel.
    • Teamwork and Interpersonal Skills - Develops effective relationships with co-workers and supervisors by helping others accomplish tasks and using collaboration and conflict resolution skills.
    • Analytical Thinking - Approaching a problem or situation by using a logical, systematic, sequential approach.
    • Customer Service - Demonstrates the ability to anticipate customers' needs and deliver services effectively and efficiently using professional demeanor.
    • Fiscal Management - Understands the relationship of the budget and resources to the strategic plan; complies with administrative controls over funds, contracts, and procurements.
    • Problem Solving - Approaches a situation or problem by defining the problem or issue; determines the significance of problem; collects information; uses logic and intuition to arrive at decisions or solutions to problems that achieve the desired outcome.
    • Supervision - Sets effective long and short-term goals based on a good understanding of management practices; establishes realistic priorities within available resources; provides motivational support; empowers others; assigns decision-making and work functions to others in an appropriate manner to maximize organizational and individual effectiveness.


    Minimum Qualifications

    Education and Experience
    Airport Operations Superintendent I
    Bachelor’s degree in aviation or closely related field AND four (4) years of experience in the aviation field, including two (2) years at the level of Airport Operations Supervisor I or higher. Aviation experience is typically gained by working for the following types of organizations: airport, airline, fixed based operator, airport related contractor, aviation related government agency or military aviation.

    Airport Operations Superintendent II
    Bachelor’s degree in aviation or closely related field AND two (2) certifications from an airport industry professional organization AND six (6) years of experience in the aviation field, including two (2) years at the level of Airport Operations Superintendent I.

    Acceptable Substitution
    Additional experience in aviation may be substituted for the bachelor’s degree requirement on a year-for- year basis.

    Required Licensing (such as driver’s license, certifications, etc.)
    • Incumbents are required to complete and pass a TSA mandated, Criminal History Records Check and a Security Threat Assessment and all other City, State or Federal requirements.
    • California Driver's License.
    • Obtain an Airport issued Ramp Drivers Permit and Movement Area Operating Permit within 6 months of employment.
