Recreation Coordinator I/II in the Aquatics Division. The City of Roseville Parks Recreation & Libraries department is seeking a dedicated and organized Recreation Coordinator who will work alongside a team to oversee all aspects of three aquatics facilities within the City of Roseville. This position includes, but is not limited to, overseeing lifeguard staff, operational budget, swim lesson programs, special events, and community outreach. They work closely with other department leaders to maintain exceptional experiences for patrons, while making safety a top priority. DEFINITION
To plan, organize, market, and coordinate a variety of recreation and community services programs as assigned; to oversee day-to-day program and related facility needs; and to perform a variety of professional and technical level tasks relative to area of assigned responsibility.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Recreation Coordinator I - This is the entry level class in the Recreation Coordinator series. This class is distinguished from the journey level by the performance of the more routine tasks and duties assigned to positions within this series. Employees at this level are not expected to perform with the same independence of direction and judgment on matters allocated to the journey level. Since this class is typically used as a training class, employees may have only limited or no directly related work experience. Employees work under general supervision while learning job tasks.
Recreation Coordinator II - This is the journey level class within the Recreation Coordinator series and is distinguished from the I level by the assignment of the full range of duties. Employees at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new, unusual, or unique situations arise and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies within the work unit. Positions within this class are flexibly staffed and are normally filled by advancement from the I level.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Recreation Coordinator I
Receives general supervision from assigned supervisory personnel.
Exercises direct supervision over technical, maintenance, administrative support and/or part-time personnel.
Recreation Coordinator II
Receives direction from assigned supervisory personnel.

Knowledge of:
- Basic principles and practices of recreation program development and service delivery.
- Recreational, educational, and social needs of a wide variety of age groups and special populations.
- Principles and practices of organizing groups, programs, and services in a recreation environment.
- Pertinent local, State and Federal laws, ordinances, and rules.
- Basic budget preparation and monitoring, cash control and related accounting practices.
- Modern office equipment and methods including use of computer applications in word processing, spreadsheet, and databases.
- Principles and practices of safety management.
- Principles and practices of aquatics safety, compliance, and trainings
- Principles and practices of pool chemicals
Ability to:
- Learn to plan, organize, and coordinate a variety of recreation programs as assigned.
- On a continuous basis, know and understand all aspects of the job; intermittently analyze work papers, reports, and special projects; identify and interpret technical and numerical information; observe and problem solve operational and technical policy and procedures.
- On a continuous basis, sit at desk for long periods of time; intermittently twist to reach equipment surrounding desk; perform simple grasping and fine manipulation; use telephone, and write or use a keyboard to communicate through written means; and lift or carry weight of 10 pounds or less.
- Train staff and volunteers in work procedures and requirements.
- Learn to market recreation programs to identified groups.
- Learn to manage operations of a variety of recreation facilities.
- Interpret and explain pertinent City and department policies and procedures.
- Analyze problems, evaluate alternatives, and recommend or take effective course of action.
- Promote and enforce safe work practices and ensure facility and equipment safety.
- Work weekends and evening shifts as required.
- Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
- Plan, organize and oversee activities of aquatic programs, events, and facilities.
- Ability to obtain and maintain required certifications.
Experience and Training
Experience:
One year of professional experience in recreation program development and implementation desirable.
AND
Training:
A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
License or Certificate
Possession of a valid California driver’s license by date of appointment.
Possession of, or ability to obtain, First Aid and CPR Certifications as issued by the American Red Cross within 6 months of hire.
Recreation Coordinator II
In addition to the qualifications for the Recreation Coordinator I:
Knowledge of:
- Principles and practices of recreation program development and service delivery and sports and recreation facilities management.
- Principles and practices of organizing groups, programs, and services in a recreation environment.
- Principles of budget monitoring.
Ability to:
- Effectively assess the needs of the community and develop and implement a variety of recreation programs that meet those needs.
- Independently manage operations of a variety of recreation facilities.
- Prepare a variety of reports and maintain accurate records and files.
Experience and Training
Experience:
Two years of professional experience performing duties similar to that of a Recreation Coordinator I with the City of Roseville.
AND
Training:
A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university,
License or Certificate
Possession of a valid California driver’s license by date of appointment.
Possession of, or ability to obtain, First Aid and CPR Certifications as issued by the American Red Cross within 6 months of hire.

SELECTION PROCESS :
All candidates meeting the minimum qualifications will have their application scored in a Formula Rate Examination. The applicant’s experience and education will be evaluated using a pre-determined formula. Scores from this evaluation will determine applicant ranking and placement on the Employment List. Supplemental questions will be utilized by the department hiring authority to make interview and selection determinations. Final appointment is contingent upon a check of past employment references, passing a City-paid fingerprint check, and depending on the position applied for, a pre-employment medical exam, drug and alcohol screening test, credit check, license and/or education verification, psychological examination, and/or an extensive Police Department background check process.
Some positions require the clearance of a comprehensive Police Department (PD) background check within 12 months of appointment. The City may appoint candidates to positions prior to clearing the extensive Police Department background check, and in those circumstances the candidate will be advised in advance that security access in the information technology systems will be limited to non-PD related systems until PD clearance is received, and if the candidate ultimately does not clear the PD background it will result in release from City service without appeal rights, in accordance with Personnel Rules 3.04.050.
