    DESCRIPTION

    This is an unclassified, non-career position. Non-career employees are allowed a maximum of 1600 work hours available over a 12-month period (working no more than 30 hours per week). Non-career employees are not typically eligible for health/dental/vision benefits; however, may be eligible for sick leave benefits. This is an at-will, temporary, part-time position.

    THE POSITION

    The Office of Civic Innovation is seeking two (2) Data Management Interns to support the City’s commitment to a culture of data-informed decision-making. As a Data Management Intern, you must be a quick learner who can rapidly get up to speed on a Department’s mission, data culture, and programs. The Data Management Interns are vital members of the diversely skilled Office of Civic Innovation in the City of Long Beach. The Office of Civic Innovation is an in-house problem-solving and capacity-building team that aims to create a more responsive, resilient, and equitable City government by leveraging our design, data, and service delivery expertise to:
    Bring the City of Long Beach closer to the Community to co-create innovative solutions. Empower staff with the competencies and tools to be innovators at all levels of the organization. Establish standards and expected behaviors for how the City uses data and evidence to close racial disparities and achieve equitable outcomes for those it serves.
    Working closely with City staff, the Data Management Intern will play a critical role in the identification, collection, inventorying, and assessing the quality of performance data to enhance the effectiveness of City programs and services on achieving desired outcomes, closing racial inequities, and supporting the City 2030 Strategic Vision Goals. A successful Data Management Intern must be able to demonstrate skills in the areas of project management, outcome-metrics and data management, in addition to having a customer-focused mindset to drive change

    EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

    • Facilitate the development of program frameworks with department subject matter experts to develop program goals and objectives and select performance metrics.
    • Support departments in identifying and documenting data sources relevant to performance management objectives.
    • Conduct a thorough analysis of existing data repositories to understand their structure and content.
    • Maintain a comprehensive data inventorying and help city departments catalog datasets and related metadata.
    • Implement data governance practices to organize and categorize data assets for all departments in the City effectively.
    • Collaborate with departmental teams to identify and prioritize critical data sets for performance analysis.
    • Develop and implement methodologies for assessing the quality of collected data.
    • Create and maintain data quality reports, identifying and addressing issues as they arise.


    REQUIREMENTS TO FILE

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
    • Current enrollment in a graduate program with a focus/emphasis in Data Science, Information Science, Information Systems, Library and Information Science, Data Analytics, or Statistics or related field. OR
    • Recently graduated within one (1) year of a graduate program in the relevant fields mentioned above.
    • 6 months of related experience paid or volunteer.

    DESIREABLE QUALIFICATIONS
    • Experience with data visualization tools (e.g., Tableau, Power BI) and statistical software (e.g., R, Python).
    • Familiarity with data governance frameworks.

    THE IDEAL CANDIDATE
    • You have excellent interpersonal skills - You can communicate both verbally and in written form to enable effective collaboration across various departments.
    • You have strong analytical skills - you have the ability to analyze data, identify trends, and draw meaningful insights. These skills are essential for a Data Management Intern. This includes proficiency in data analysis tools and techniques, as well as the ability to interpret, communicate, and present findings effectively.
    • You are detailed - as a Data Management Intern you are meticulous to ensure accuracy and reliability in data collection, entry, and validation processes to maintain data integrity.
    • You are a problem-solver - you are able overcome challenges such as data inconsistencies, quality issues, or integration complexities using problem-solving skills to troubleshoot issues, implement solutions, and optimize data workflows effectively.
