    Job Summary

    Under the supervision of the Director of Equity Programs, EOP Sr. Associate Director, and EOP Associate Director, the incumbent provides a range of comprehensive academic advising, career and personal counseling services to students. The Assistant Director/EOP Counselor is responsible for the coordination of the EOP 100 course curriculum, faculty hiring, and training. The Assistant Director/EOP Counselor is also responsible for the coordination and oversight of the EOP Peer Advisor component.

    Furthermore, the incumbent provides services that are equitable, inclusive and provide culturally sensitive services that enhance the quality of campus life. This position uses a student centered and equity minded approach in all communication and service efforts.

    Key Responsibilities
    • Provide holistic academic advising, personal, and career counseling to EOP students - Assist students with academic advising, financial aid and career planning. Coordinate academic related campaigns early alerts, academic warning, murky-middle, and major declaration campaigns (as requested by directors). Oversee EOP Peer Advisor component in daily activities (academic advising, workshops, and presentations).
    • Coordinate the EOP 100 Instructional component - Assist with hiring process to ensure timely hiring. Oversee curriculum and textbook selection in coordination with the Director and/or Sr. Associate Director. Oversee SPOT evaluation and provides annual report to director for instructor effectiveness. Oversee EOP 100 enrollment all year round.
    • Coordinate the EOP Peer Advising component - Responsible for the overall coordination of the Peer Advisor component which includes hiring, training, supervision, and reviewing Beach Connect notes. Coordinate in-person and virtual appointments for EOP Peer Advisors. Oversight and training of Peer Advisors to provide academic and soft skills related workshops.

    Knowledge Skills and Abilities

    Extensive experience of over three years in academic advising, financial aid, and counseling highly preferred. Over three years of supervisory experience highly preferred. Experience with developing and editing course curriculum content for first year-courses. Experience with developing and overseeing Academic Peer Advisors. Experience interpreting academic policies and major requirements for degree completion.

    Ability to develop and coordinate large scale programming. Ability to develop and conduct workshops to students and staff. Ability to interpret and apply financial aid and academic policies and procedures. Ability to work with diverse faculty, staff and student populations. Ability to work as part of a team through close collaboration with colleagues and coordinate with others. Ability to work under pressure and remain calm and focused, and to calm and give focus to others in an extremely hectic fast-paced work environment.

    Basic working knowledge of financial aid process and policies. Working knowledge of standard safe work practices. Thorough knowledge of office systems and ability to use a broad range of technology, systems, and software applications. Excellent oral communication skills and effective interpersonal skills required. Incumbent must have experience processing, answering and following-up as needed with office mail, phone calls, email and in-person visitors. Must be able to respond to complex inquiries from the public, residents, parents, prospective residents, CSULB employees and students. Due to telephone and in-person interactions, must possess the ability to understand, interpret and respond (orally and in writing) to a broad range of complex issues, procedures, policies, ideas, information, and instructions.

    Ability to communicate with an ethnically and culturally diverse campus community. Ability to follow all university policies, procedures, and guidelines including but not limited to safety, civility, information security, and non-discrimination policies and procedures. Ability to contribute to a positive university experience for each and every student and assist in achieving the university's commitment to a "vision of excellence."

    Education and Experience

    • Equivalent to a bachelor's degree with upper or graduate coursework in counseling and guidance, human relations, or related fields and three years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas required.

    • Five years of experience highly preferred.

    • Master's degree or work-in-progress in student services preferred.

    • Experience with curriculum development preferred.

    Physical Summary
    • Medium work - Job involves lifting heavy-weight objects (20-40 pounds) and/or 20% - 40% of the job involves standing, squatting, kneeling, or walking. May require pushing or pulling objects within the weight limits.

    Compensation

    Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department’s fiscal resources.

    Hiring Range: The hiring range for this position is $5,276 - $6,720 per month commensurate with candidate's education, experience, skills, and training.

    CSU Classification Salary Range: The CSU Classification Salary Range for this position is $5,276 - $7,517 per month.

    Time Base

    1.0 time-base, 40 hours per week.

    Duration of Appointment

    This is a temporary position for 1 year with no permanent status granted. Temporary assignments may expire prior to the ending date.
