    The Position

    Heat Plant Specialists operate, adjust, monitor, maintain, clean and repair high and/or low pressure boilers and hot water heat generating equipment, auxiliary equipment such as fuel and combustion systems, compressors, pumps, steam lines, steam traps, heat exchangers, water lines, controls, gauges, and emergency power generators.

    Incumbents function as first-line supervisors who train, supervise and evaluate the performance of assigned staff; assign and review work; and initiate disciplinary action.

    The Nevada department of Corrections has a vacancy for a Heat Plant Specialist 4 at Lovelock Correctional Center, in Lovelock, NV. Incumbents are Responsible for operating, adjusting, monitoring, maintaining, cleaning and repairing high and/or low pressure boilers and hot water heat generating equipment, auxiliary equipment such as fuel and combustion systems, compressors, pumps, steam lines, steam traps, heat exchangers, water lines, controls, gauges, and emergency power generators. Perform seasonal inspections and overhauls of heat plant and heat distribution systems by dismantling and cleaning boilers, repairing or replacing refractories, repacking valves, repairing pumps and seals, and checking and calibrating controls according to agency policies and regulatory requirements. Responsible for installing, retrofit and fabricating new equipment and components utilizing electrical, welding and plumbing skills. Incumbents must be able to function as a lead worker for inmate crews and document inmate performance through completion of periodic performance reports. Responsible for implementing security procedures which include securing the work area and accountability for assigned inmates, staff, tools and equipment. Incumbents under limited supervision plan, assign and supervise the work of skilled and semi-skilled heat plant specialist engaged all or part of the duties described in the series concept. Incumbents are responsible for data entry of heat plan characteristics and weather conditions. Incumbents prepare budget requests, maintain records of system operating conditions, maintenance performed and equipment malfunctions. Positions in this class are distinguished from those at the lower level by complexities involved in directing the operation and maintenance of heat plant utilizing high and low pressure steam systems, high and low pressure water systems and associated distribution systems. Incumbents supervise and schedule work for skilled staff. Incumbent must be willing to work in Lovelock, NV.

    To Qualify:

    In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
    Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications) Completion of a recognized heat plant apprenticeship program followed by two years of journey level experience as a heat plant specialist; OR two years as a Heat Plant Specialist III in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience. Special Requirements A pre-employment criminal history check and fingerprinting are required. Persons offered employment in this position will be required to pay for these items.
