ABOUT THE POSITIONThe Las Vegas Justice Court is seeking qualified candidates to apply for the Court Reporter position. Court Reporters are responsible for providing accurate verbatim reporting of court hearings, proceedings and actions; transcribes verbatim court proceedings into printed form and associated notes which include civil and criminal matters. Reporters are responsible for providing accurate real-time reporting services to judicial officers, preparing transcripts in accordance with applicable Government Codes, Rules of Court, and Statues, and provide read back upon request.
This examination will establish an Open Competitive Eligibility list to fill current and/or future vacancies that may occur within the next six (6) months or may be extended as needed by Human Resources.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTSEducation and Experience: Equivalent to an Associate’s degree from an accredited institution AND two (2) years of full-time experience in preparing verbatim transcriptions from recording devices OR four (4) years of recording court proceedings and transcribing such proceedings in real time in a court setting may be considered. College level course work in paralegal studies, secretarial, or office administrative subjects is desired. May be required to provide own recording/transcribing equipment. Experience providing Real-time Reporting and Computer Aided Transcription (CAT) capability is preferred.All qualifying education and each experience must be clearly documented in the “Education” and “Work Experience” sections of the application.

Licensing/Certification:Must possess a valid Nevada Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions at the time of appointment. As stated in NRS?656.145, must possess a valid Certified Court Reporter Certification issued by the Nevada State Board of Certified Court Reporters.
Background Investigation: Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a background investigation. Periodically after employment background investigations may be conducted.
Citizenship: Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES- Stenographically or by use of voice writing equipment, reports verbatim all court proceedings by use of Computer-Aided Transcription (CAT) equipment and software and may request clarification from judicial officers and other speakers when necessary to ensure accuracy.
- Sets up and operates audio/video equipment to record all official activities of the court to which assigned; repeats sections of recordings for the judge or jury as requested.
- Maintains automated or hand-prepared logs of proceedings and actions; correlates such logged information with recorded data and makes notations of witness or participant behavior, session times, etc. to augment the record.
- Transcribes court proceedings to printed format, using word processing and appropriate transcription apparatus.
- Ensures that motions, decisions, and all actions are accurately documented.
- Ensures that proper authorization is received for transcription requests.
- Proofreads transcribed materials for accuracy.
- Maintains records of work performed.
- May be required to change assignments on short notice or work temporary assignments in other court departments.
