General Description and Classification Standards
This classification is a direct report to the Solicitor’s designee(s). The purpose of this classification is to assist in the major functional areas within the department. Solicitor Senior Assistant Attorneys provide training and direction to less experienced attorneys, and perform administrative duties as assigned. All seniors shall assist, direct, and manage the prosecution of Traffic and Criminal cases within the Atlanta Municipal Court.

Receives guidance from the Solicitor or his designee (s).

Understands the purpose of the organization including its statutory mandate, customers, services, and measures of mission effectiveness. Serves as a senior member of the legal staff and is prosecuting all cases on behalf of the city that are tried in the Municipal Court of Atlanta Represents the City of Atlanta in all cases brought before the Municipal Court of Atlanta Perform all appellate work, including work taken either by way of appeal or certiorari, resulting from either cases tried or commitment hearings in the court. Advise police officers on individual cases, general procedure and legal developments relating to case preparation. Perform other duties as are or may be required by law or by ordinance Performs legal functions related to investigation and prosecution of traffic and criminal cases. Reviews police reports and determines criminal charges daily, secures additional information from the appropriate law enforcement officers. Formulates strategy and determines sentencing, conducts pleas negotiations, investigates data and researches applicable law. Delegates work assignments to attorneys and the legal support teams. Prepares and responds to pre-trial motions. Works with Neighborhood Planning Units (NPU?s and police zones Provides effective customer service, communication and interpersonal techniques regarding interaction with management, coworkers, relevant departments, court staff and the general public. Operates computers and works with databases, spreadsheets, word processing, presentations, e-mails and other related software. May perform other duties as assigned by Solicitor.

Has thorough knowledge of policies, procedures, and activities as they pertain to the performance of duties relating to the position of Solicitor Senior Assistant. Has the ability to compile, organize, prepare and maintain an assortment of records, reports and information in an effective manner and according to departmental and/or governmental regulations. Has comprehensive knowledge of the terminology used within the department. Has the ability to communicate effectively with other staff members. Has the ability to utilize independent judgment in routine and non-routine situations. Is able to utilize and understand computer applications and techniques as necessary in the completion of daily assignments. Has the ability to plan, organize and prioritize daily assignments and work activities. Has a good working knowledge of courtroom procedures and methods as required in the performance of duties. Ability to use a variety of computer tools, including text and data tools, and specialized data systems. Ability to read, analyze and interpret legal documents. Ability to respond to inquiries or complaints from the general public, other governmental agencies, law enforcement, and other attorneys Ability to calculate figures Well - developed verbal and writing skills; Physical Demands Must be able to successfully perform the primary job duties and responsibilities.
Minimum Qualifications - Education and Experience
Law degree required and 4 years of experience in traffic, criminal, and government laws.
Preferred Qualifications - Education and Experience
Same as minimum.
Licensures and Certifications
Have and maintain Valid State Bar License of Georgia and other certifications required for the position.
