    The Position

    Librarians are typically assigned to the Nevada State Library, Archives and Public Records (NSLAPR) Division and perform a broad range of professional level duties in support of a library that organizes and provides access to a wide selection of materials in a variety of formats. Incumbents perform administrative work in planning, coordinating and directing activities within one or more functional areas of the library including, but not limited to, acquisitions; cataloging; reference; circulation; collection maintenance; serials; document delivery/interlibrary loan; government documents; library services for the blind and physically disabled; and/or statewide library development.

    Incumbents possess a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform work independently with little or no additional training.

    This position manages the Research Library at the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT). As the sole librarian, you will be the curator of the library's resources and relationships. Key functions include continuous evaluation and growth of electronic and print collections, providing reference services, fulfilling information requests, performing original and copy cataloging of new and historical materials, and monitoring and reporting on the program's budget and use of library services. Also of importance is building user awareness and participation though active outreach, regularly producing blog posts, website and SharePoint updates, and participating in the national transportation library community. Travel up to 25% may be required to attend meetings, events, and training.     To Qualify:

    In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
    Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications) Master's degree in a program accredited by the American Library Association and one year of professional library experience which included a combination of at least three of the following: original cataloging/metadata, reference, e-resources, social media, government publications and/or collection development; OR Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university which included 21 semester credits in library studies and two years of professional library experience as described above; OR Associate's degree from an accredited college or university which included 21 semester credits in library studies and four years of library experience as described above, three of which were at the professional level; OR graduation from high school or equivalent; 21 semester credits in library studies; and seven years of library experience as described above, four years of which were at the professional level; OR one year of experience as a Librarian I in Nevada State service which included 21 semester credits in library studies; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above which included 21 semester credits in library studies Special Notes The required 21 college or university credits in library science must have included instruction in each of the following subjects: organization and administration of a library; cataloging and classifying of materials for a library; reference, bibliography and service; selection of materials for a library; literature for children and young adults; the use and selection of educational media and audio-visual equipment; and the use of computers in a library and in the study of library science. Per NAC 379.010, the credit requirements are not applicable to an applicant who holds a Master's degree in library science from an institution accredited by the American Library Association. The ability to travel at least 25% of the time is required. Special Requirements Applicants must attach copies of their college or university transcripts indicating the successful completion of required credits in library science at the time of application. The Examination Application Evaluation Exam The exam will consist of an application evaluation. It is essential that applications include detailed information with time frames regarding education and experience. The most qualified applicants will be contacted by the hiring agency for interview. The hiring agency may require specific skills related testing as part of the interviewing process.

    The presence of Nevada's earliest inhabitants, beginning about 12,400 years ago, is marked by many petroglyphs and archaeological sites. Baskets, decoys, and ingenious traps are evidence of the resourcefulness of these early people in a harsh and arid environment.

On October 31, 1864, President Lincoln proclaimed Nevada's admission to the Union as the 36th state. The State's first elected Governor, Henry Blasdel, took office on December 5, 1864.

    Today, Nevada is the nation's seventh largest state in land area. Several hundred mountain ranges cross its landscape, many with elevations over 10,000 feet. In contrast, the State's lowest point (along the Colorado River) is only 470 feet above sea level. From majestic mountains to desert valleys, nature has endowed Nevada with diverse and unique ecosystems.
