    Minimum Qualifications
    Education and/or Equivalent Experience:
    • Graduation with a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in a field related to engineering, plus six (6) years of experience in engineering acquired before and/or after licensing as a professional engineer.


    Licenses or Certifications:
    • Licensed Professional Engineer (P.E.) in the State of Texas; or if currently licensed in another state, must have the ability to obtain a Texas P.E. license within six (6) months of employment.
    Notes to Applicants
    The position will work as a plans reviewer and will be assigned to work in coordination with the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport ( AUS ) and will be officed at the AUS administrative building. The ideal applicant should be versed in Fire and Building codes and be able to provide technical guidance to several project teams, acting in a Subject Matter Expert capacity to the Airport for Fire and Life Safety items. They will be requested to participate in recurring AUS project design meetings and liaise between the Austin Fire Department and the AUS Planning and Development division to identify code concerns that should be resolved by the Design Team, as well as participate in plan reviews of design milestone deliverables (30%, 60%, and 90%) with the goal of avoiding costly change orders to field work through closer coordination in the design phase.

    The position will be asked to interpret current code requirements as applied to existing facility renovation projects to better manage life safety systems integration.

    It is important to note that this is not a design position, but a review position that will coordinate with the licensed design teams who will be stamping their plans/specs. The selected individual will work closely with AUS design manager(s) as well as the Project Manager of each respective project to capture their comments and feedback with the end goal of streamlining final Plan Check and permitting through the City’s Public Project Review (PuPR) review process.

    The following additional job duties and responsibilities will apply:
    Review building permit plan submittals for proposed new construction and renovation projects at AUS for compliance with the Austin Fire Code. Fire protection related building permit review items include identifying required fire protection systems and features, protection features for the installation of hazardous materials systems, and mechanical smoke control systems. Be able to perform code compliance and analytical plans review on a wide variety of fire protection systems and features. Be able to conduct plans review and inspections to ensure compliance with the applicable codes, standards, and City ordinances related to the storage, handling, and use of hazardous materials. Be able to review computer modeling included as part of a plans submission to justify code compliance or equivalency and/or performance-based code design. Participate in preliminary design meetings with design professionals concerning proposed technically complex building projects to identify required fire protection systems and features and discuss acceptable design options. Coordinate code interpretation and application with other City departments and agencies including the City’s Development Services Department. If you are selected for this position and meet the Driver Safety Standards in the City of Austin Driver Safety Program you may drive when necessary to multiple locations as part of your regular job duties.     • Knowledge of various National Fire Protection ( NFPA ) standards include NFPA 13, NFPA 72, NFPA 14, and NFPA 20.Knowledge of International Fire Code and the fire protection provisions of the International Building Code.
    • Knowledge of NFPA 409 and NFPA 415
    • Experience with design and/or review of airport terminals, hangars, ramps or taxiways.
    • Licensed as Professional Engineer in field of Fire Protection Engineering or the ability to obtain within 6 months of employments.
    • Ability to travel to more than one work locations.
    Duties, Functions and Responsibilities
    Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.

    Approves, processes, and seals plans, specifications, construction documents by applying engineering standardization of practices and principles of complex calculations for applied discipline within Local and State regulatory requirements. Manages engineering that are routine, non-priority projects or programs. These projects require a level of technical proficiency as well as coordinative and administrative responsibility. Identifies, evaluates, and provides improvement recommendations with preliminary and final designs and design criteria for assigned program or projects. Assists in the preparation of preliminary and long-range plans, schedules, estimates, budgets, detailed final plans, specifications, special conditions, and agreements. Provides technical assistance with project progress from design through completion. Develops cost estimates, tracks expenditures, and prepares cost estimates and engineering and feasibility reports and studies for projects. Prepares and/or assists with preliminary contract documents, specifications, and plans. Prepares final plans for review of specifications, special conditions, and agreements and coordinates and oversees technical work of contractors, affected public agencies, and utilities. Writes technical specifications for construction contracts. Reviews plans and approves permits by applying complex engineering standardization of practices and principles for applied discipline within Local and State regulatory requirements. Inspects and monitors projects for legal compliance by reviewing work completed by contractors and ensuring compliance to specifications by completing complex calculations that are used to further provide analysis of preliminary results of a project. Develops, negotiates, and monitors contracts by reviewing and writing contract change orders in the area of technical expertise and may negotiate and recommend financial arrangements for changes to contact. Conducts field inspections of work done by contractors to ensure compliance with plans and specifications. Drafts and recommends approval of contract change orders. Researches and performs statistical analysis for validation of reports and publication of results in various communication formats. Develops standard policies and ordinances for various contracts and/or projects and operating procedures. May provide analysis and recommendation of performance of various personnel assigned by contract or projects.
